Secrets to keeping pigs and chickens healthy
Ngoc Duong used to be a poor commune, people mainly grew rice, corn, raised chickens and pigs for self-sufficiency. Mr. Giang’s family was no exception, struggling with the fields all year round. He used to dream of having enough food, clothes and a full life.
But then, Mr. Giang realized that the land here was quite flat, with many natural food sources from corn, cassava, and wild vegetables, very favorable for commercial livestock farming. After many sleepless nights, in 2023, he decided to borrow 100 million VND from the bank to invest in solid barns and buy high-quality pig and chicken breeds.

“The early days were very difficult, with little capital, no experience, and lurking diseases. I worked and learned everywhere, from friends, veterinary staff, and then researched more on newspapers and the internet,” Mr. Giang said.
Mr. Giang’s model focuses on two specialty livestock: black pigs and sugarcane chickens. Black pigs are kept in pens, carefully cared for, regularly vaccinated, and their pens are disinfected. “Hygiene, vaccination, and disinfection – they sound simple, but they are the keys to keeping pigs healthy and disease-free,” Mr. Giang said.
On average, he raises over 100 pigs and 10 sows per litter. Each year, he sells about 12 tons of pork, priced at nearly 70,000 VND/kg, bringing in over 800 million VND. The farm is also a reputable supplier of breeds for many households in the area.
In addition, Mr. Giang developed a flock of more than 1,000 free-range sugarcane chickens. After 5 months, the chickens reached a weight of 2kg or more, and were favored by traders at a price of 110,000 VND/kg. Each batch, he earned an additional 200 million VND. To save costs, he made the most of local food sources: corn flour, cassava, banana leaves, wild vegetables... which were both cheap and retained the delicious flavor of the meat.
A role model in the sustainable poverty reduction movement
Not keeping it to himself, Mr. Giang is always willing to share his experience in raising livestock, disease prevention techniques, and food mixing methods with his neighbors. Thanks to that, many households in the commune boldly invested in raising livestock, gradually forming a concentrated commodity livestock farming area.

He became the economic “locomotive” in Ngoc Duong, a new rural area that is taking on a bright new look. “I hope that everyone can rise up, escape poverty, and get rich right on their homeland,” said Mr. Giang.
From a farmer who was busy all year round with his fields, Mr. Giang has now become a billionaire farmer. His story is not only the result of his personal labor, but also a testament to the right direction: developing commercial agriculture , based on local strengths, associated with the industrious and creative spirit of farmers.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Thang, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ngoc Duong Commune, Tuyen Quang Province, said that Mr. Giang's livestock farming model was built to ensure safety and comply with regulations on barns and livestock farming. Mr. Giang is a typical example of a new generation of farmers - bold in borrowing capital, applying science and technology and linking to the market. This is also an important direction for building new rural areas and sustainable poverty reduction.
Thanks to this model, Mr. Giang not only improves his family's life but also motivates many young people to return to agriculture, affirming that if they know how to choose the right direction, the countryside can be a place to start a business and get rich sustainably.
