The moment a resident doctor chose a major "caused a stir" on social networks
Many expressed pride when witnessing the moment when new resident doctors took turns calling out their names and choosing their majors.
"The country's elite gather here" - one account commented. Another wrote: "Looking at the students choosing their majors, I can clearly see their passion and responsibility for the profession".
Many opinions also highly appreciate the determination of the top 10 excellent candidates when most of them chose "key" majors such as obstetrics and gynecology, diagnostic imaging, anesthesia and resuscitation, and cosmetic surgery.
Some humorous comments compared "the exciting calling of names to choose a major to the final of a game show" or "more exciting than a beauty pageant"...
“Match Day” - an annual activity for Hanoi Medical University residents to register for a specialty after the exam
The event took place on the afternoon of September 9 within the framework of "Match Day" - an annual activity for resident doctors of Hanoi Medical University to register for a major after the most difficult exam in the medical industry.
Perhaps that is why the Match Day event not only left its mark at the Hanoi Medical University auditorium, but also became a topic that was shared and discussed enthusiastically by the online community. The residency program is considered the most prestigious training level in the Vietnamese medical education system.
According to the rules, the new residents take turns stepping onto the stage, calling out their names and numbers according to their exam scores, then choosing a major displayed on the screen. The person with the highest score gets to choose first.
When the quota is met, the major will close.
When the quota is full, the major will close, forcing the remaining candidates to switch to another choice.
This year’s Match Day saw a huge surge in interest for Obstetrics and Gynecology and Plastic Surgery. Of the 20 candidates with the highest scores, 7 chose Obstetrics and Gynecology, 4 chose Plastic Surgery, while this major only had 6 spots available.
Therefore, candidates from position 30 and below no longer have the opportunity to register if they previously planned to choose Plastic Surgery.

The valedictorian of the 50th residency exam was Dr. Vu Ngoc Duy, with a score of 25.09/30. Previously, Duy also graduated from the medical school of Hanoi Medical University, with a total score of 8.11/10.
Duy said that his decision to pursue medicine came from the influence of his mother, who is also a doctor. Since he was young, he understood the life and work of a doctor more than other fields, so he chose to study medicine. With the first priority, Duy decided to choose Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Among the 426 residency quotas this year, the Obstetrics and Gynecology major with only 15 quotas (the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Hanoi Medical University takes 13 quotas, Lao Cai Provincial Department of Health takes 2 quotas), is one of the "hot spots", attracting the attention of many excellent students.
Reasons why doctors drop out of Hanoi Medical University residency program
There were two doctors who did not choose any specialty. Among them, public opinion was stirred up when a clip recorded the scene of Nguyen Dinh Hoang (born in 2001), the new doctor with the number 61, not registering for a specialty at the Match Day event.
New resident physician Nguyen Dinh Hoang (born in 2001), student of class 50, Hanoi Medical University, also has an impressive academic record.

It is known that last August, Nguyen Dinh Hoang was admitted to the residency program of Hanoi Medical University (ranked 61) and VinUni University (ranked 1).
The new doctor decided to choose the Anesthesiology residency program at VinUni University.
Since 1974, Hanoi Medical University has been assigned by the Ministry of Health to train resident physicians, aiming to provide good doctors and at the same time train high-quality lecturers. Over the past 50 years, the school has trained more than 5,000 resident physicians, many of whom have become leaders and leading experts of the Ministry of Health, central and provincial hospitals, contributing to raising the level of Vietnamese medicine on the international map.
To participate in the residency training, doctors who have graduated from medicine, traditional medicine, and dentistry can take the residency exam immediately after graduation. Successful candidates will become residents, training full-time for 3 years at the school and practice facility.
