Thanh Ha pottery village is located along the Thu Bon River branch flowing to Cua Dai. From Hoi An ancient town, tourists can visit the village by both water and land. Previously, boats still docked to visit the craft village, but due to spontaneity and lack of safety, the government requested to stop.
Mr. Bui Van Dung, Chairman of Hoi An Tay Ward People's Committee, said that based on Decree 140 of the Government on the regulations on the division of authority of local authorities at 2 levels, including the decentralization related to the management of water ports, the locality has worked with the City Department of Construction, completed the relevant legal documents, including the conditions on infrastructure of ports, waiting rooms, etc. before issuing the decision to announce the water port serving tourism activities.
The tourist wharf is located at Km1+600 of the second branch of the Thu Bon River, on the left bank of Hoi An Tay Ward. The owner is the Public Service Supply Center of Hoi An Tay Ward.
The wharf belongs to the group of level 3 wharves; designed area of 76.5m2 , including T-shaped wharf, access road, waiting house, management house and auxiliary items, allowed to receive vehicles with draft of 0.56m, carrying 40 passengers.
Mr. Bui Van Dung shared that the reopening of the tourist wharf is a great effort by the government to diversify the experience services for visitors, which is of interest and expectation to many people in the pottery village. Previously, when the wharf was still in operation, it was estimated that more than 70% of visitors to the pottery village came by water, mainly international visitors.
Thanh Ha pottery village is not far from Hoi An ancient town, and has been established and developed for more than 500 years. Before 2000, this place mainly produced household pottery such as pots and pans, roundabouts (saving items like piggy banks)...
In 2001, the pottery village began to shift its focus to tourism, gradually becoming the busiest craft village tourist attraction in the city, including the Central region.
At its peak in 2019, more than 707,000 visitors bought tickets to visit the village, generating tens of billions of VND in revenue. Since 2022, although tourism activities have just recovered after the COVID-19 pandemic, they have also achieved steady growth. In 2024 alone, more than 509,000 visitors visited the village.
Tourism development not only contributes to the effective preservation of craft villages but also creates sustainable livelihoods for local people, through craft demonstrations to serve guests and the sale of souvenirs.
Currently, Thanh Ha pottery village has 32 production facilities (4 facilities specializing in traditional pottery production) with about 70 direct workers, with an average income of 8-10 million VND/month.
