Hail appeared in Lai Chau

On the morning of January 17, Mr. Phung Long Ka, Chairman of the People's Committee of Thu Lum Commune, Muong Te District, Lai Chau, said that a hailstorm had just occurred in the area that lasted for about 15 minutes.

According to the commune leader, at around 7am this morning, thunderstorms suddenly appeared, the sky darkened, then thunder, small tornadoes and hail appeared.

"The hailstorm appeared locally in the central area of ​​the commune for about 15 minutes, the hailstones were about the size of a fingertip. After a quick check, no damage was done to houses, only some vegetables were affected," Mr. Phung Long Ka informed.

According to information from the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, last night and this morning in Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Lao Cai, and Ha Giang provinces there were showers and thunderstorms, with some heavy rain.

Thunderstorms may produce tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong gusts of wind. Localized heavy rain may cause flash floods in small rivers and streams, landslides on steep slopes, and flooding in low-lying areas.

In Sa Pa ( Lao Cai ), due to the impact of heavy rain, this morning, at km3 of provincial road 152 (Cau May ward), a landslide occurred, causing traffic congestion.

Immediately after learning of the situation, the People's Committee of Cau May Ward mobilized forces to coordinate with people and businesses to overcome and level rocks and soil, ensuring safety for people and vehicles passing through.

Hail in Lai Chau usually occurs in March every year. This year, hail appeared earlier, showing that the weather has complicated and unpredictable developments. Local authorities, functional agencies, and people need to proactively prepare plans to prevent natural disasters from occurring.
