Heavy rain combined with hydroelectric dam discharge, 174 households of a commune in Thanh Hoa submerged in water

Due to prolonged heavy rain, combined with the flood discharge from Cam Thuy 1 Hydropower Plant, the water level of the Ma River rose, submerging 174 households in Vinh Yen Commune (Vinh Loc District, Thanh Hoa Province).

On September 23, Mr. Trinh Hong Tram - Chairman of Vinh Yen Commune People's Committee (Vinh Loc District, Thanh Hoa Province) said: Currently, the whole commune has 174 flooded households, of which, in Yen Ton Thuong village there are 139 households, Tho Don village has 35 households.

Also according to Mr. Tram, from 6:00 p.m. last night (September 22), when the Ma River water level exceeded the riverbank, it flooded into people's houses, forcing dozens of households to evacuate that night to ensure safety.

“For households living near the river, at risk of deep flooding, we have called and asked people to move to relatives' houses in higher places for shelter. This morning, the Commune People's Committee has asked the Department of Education and Training of Vinh Loc district to let local primary and secondary school students stay home to ensure safety. To prevent electrical incidents, the Commune People's Committee has also consulted with Vinh Loc district Electricity to cut off power in some deeply flooded areas,” said Mr. Tram.

Currently, Vinh Yen commune (Vinh Loc district, Thanh Hoa province) has a section of water level 2.5m high.

Many points are deeply submerged in water.

A farming tool of the people has not been moved yet.

Many flooded households had to go up to the second floor to live.

People make boats to move things to high places.

Mr. Trinh Van Huy in Vinh Yen commune (Vinh Loc district, Thanh Hoa province) is moving furniture to a higher place.

According to people in Vinh Yen commune (Vinh Loc district, Thanh Hoa province), it has not been since 2017 that people have seen flood water rise this high.

Currently, Yen Ton Thuong village is the most heavily flooded area.
