The statement was made during a meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on multilateral cooperation for the sake of creating a more just and sustainable world order on July 16. Russia is currently the rotating president of the UNSC for July.
Sputnik news agency quoted Mr. Lavrov as noting: “When agreeing on common guarantees and agreements, we will have to take into account new geostrategic realities on the Eurasian continent, where a truly equal and indivisible security architecture is taking shape. Europe risks falling behind this objective historical process.”
The Russian Foreign Minister also commented on the statement of White House National Security Council strategic communications coordinator John Kirby that Washington does not want conflict with Moscow because it would lead to "catastrophic consequences" for Europe.
According to Mr. Lavrov, if Washington believes that a new global war will not affect the United States but its European allies and uses this analysis to form the basis of the strategy of the administration of President Joe Biden, it is a "very dangerous misconception."
The veteran Russian diplomat also added that any solution to the European crisis must include concrete steps aimed at eliminating "the root causes of the crisis in Europe" and eliminating threats to Russia from the West.
Also related to the crisis in Ukraine, Bloomberg news agency reported on the same day that former US President Donald Trump's assistant, Mr. Richard Grenell, proposed establishing autonomous regions in the Eastern European country.
According to Mr. Grenell, in this way, Ukraine will be able to achieve peace and maintain its territorial integrity. Besides, he said, Ukraine cannot become a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), despite the request of President Volodimyr Zelensky.
