Ahead of the warning that storm No. 10 (Bualoi) with a gust intensity of level 15 is about to make landfall, fishermen in coastal communes of Ha Tinh are braving the rain and wind, urgently taking measures to tie down and reinforce boats at their anchorages.

In Thien Cam commune, which suffered heavy damage from storm No. 5 last August when dozens of boats were sunk by waves, anxiety was evident on the faces of fishermen. Learning from experience, this time, prevention work was deployed more drastically.

From early morning, fishermen gathered, bringing all small and medium sized boats to sheltered anchorage areas, away from the shore with big waves. They used large, strong ropes to tie the boats close together, firmly fixed to the anchors and embankments.

Mr. Nguyen Van Nam, a fisherman in Hai Nam village, said: “The recent storm No. 5 caused great damage, people lost dozens of boats, big and small. This time, storm No. 10 was warned to be even stronger. We have to work very carefully and thoroughly. It is tiring to brave the rain and wind, but it is better than seeing our property destroyed by the waves. Just seeing our boats safe in the storm is a bit reassuring.”

Standing next to the boat that had just been carefully tied up, his face showing fatigue and worry, fisherman Hoang Van Hoan (Xuan Bac village, Thien Cam commune) said: "We stayed up all night last night to work together to lift the boat up high, tying it up with everything we could. Only by enduring this hardship can we protect our fishing rod. We just hope the storm won't be too strong so that people will suffer less damage."

In Loc Ha commune, fishermen are also racing against time. The anchorage areas are packed with people and boats. The local disaster prevention command has mobilized all human resources to help people move their boats to safe shelters, while also checking and supervising the reinforcement work.

Fisherman Nguyen Van Binh (Giang Ha village, Loc Ha commune) said: “My whole family lives thanks to this fishing boat. The storm is coming very fast, so we have to concentrate our manpower and work at full capacity. We use old tires, add more cables, and tie the boat very carefully, not daring to be careless for even a minute.”

Fishermen understand that, in the face of the power of nature, proactiveness and caution are vital factors to minimize damage. This is not only about protecting property, but also protecting livelihoods from the direct threat of a major storm that is forecast to be very strong and moving quickly.

Not only in Thien Cam and Loc Ha, at this time, fishermen in coastal communes in Ha Tinh are simultaneously deploying storm prevention work with the highest sense of urgency. Under the close direction of local authorities, thousands of boats have been brought to safe anchorage, using all materials to tie up. All fishermen are working hard to complete the work, determined to protect their property before storm No. 10 makes landfall.

We have learned a lot from the damage caused by the recent storm No. 5. For this storm, we have strongly instructed the anchorage areas to arrange ships scientifically , use double anchors and high-strength mooring lines. The goal is to ensure maximum safety for all vehicles, and not let the situation of ships being sunk by waves or damaged by collisions like before happen. All work must be completed before 12 noon today.

Mr. Than Quoc Te - Deputy Director of the Management Board of Fishing Ports and Storm Shelters for Fishing Boats in Ha Tinh.
