After days of anchoring to protect against storm No. 10, hundreds of fishing boats of Thien Cam and Cam Trung communes... hurriedly went out to sea to catch seafood. At this time, many boats have docked, bringing back tons of fresh sea crabs to supply the market. (Photo: Huong Thanh) According to the experience of many fishermen, the trips to sea after the storm often bring in a lot of seafood such as crabs, silver pomfret, mackerel, herring... On this occasion, many fishing boats of Cam fishermen recorded a crab yield 2-3 times higher than a few weeks ago. Mr. Le Viet Ha (Tan Trung Thuy village, Cam Trung commune) shared: " After the order to open the sea, the weather was favorable so we took advantage of the opportunity to go out to sea. My boat has 6 people, fishing in the sea about 15 nautical miles from shore, after 2 days of hard work, the estimated output is from 1 to 1.5 quintals of green crabs and nearly 1 quintal of red crabs. With a purchase price of 100,000 - 350,000 VND/kg depending on the type, we earned nearly 45 million VND ".
Sea crabs usually appear in large numbers from May to October of the lunar calendar. However, depending on the time, weather conditions and fishing area, fishermen can catch a large quantity of fresh, firm crabs.
On shore, traders were waiting to buy seafood for fishermen. Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan - owner of Nam Lan seafood purchasing facility (Thien Cam commune) shared: " These days, fishermen's boats return with many types of fresh seafood, in which, the crab output recorded an increase of 2-3 times compared to before. In order to meet the demand for products from fishermen, my facility mobilized dozens of workers to classify, transport, and process crabs. On average, each day the facility purchases 3-5 tons of crabs, distributing them to the market in the province and localities such as: Nghe An, Quang Ninh, Thanh Hoa, Hai Phong ..."
According to Ms. Lan, crabs are divided into many types such as: green crabs, red crabs, three-eyed crabs, stone crabs... with prices ranging from 100,000 - 350,000 VND/kg. This is a stable price compared to the time before the storm, thanks to which, when the yield is high, each boat can earn tens of millions of VND after a few days of fishing.
Besides sea crabs, many boats also catch a large quantity of snails with a selling price of 450,000 - 500,000/kg. These are all products that bring high economic value, helping fishermen have a good income. Joy was evident on the faces of every fisherman when each heavy bag of crabs was brought ashore.
Fisherman Nguyen Tien Khuong (Vinh Loc village, Cam Trung commune) shared: " At this time, seafood is purchased as soon as it is caught, the price is stable, so we are very excited. In recent trips, my boat has caught a lot of blue crabs, which were purchased at high prices, ranging from 300,000 - 350,000 VND/kg. Thanks to that, each fisherman can "pocket" about 2-3 million VND after each trip. When all the seafood is consumed, we refuel, provide ice, and replenish necessities to start a new journey."
At seafood purchasing facilities in Thien Cam commune, the working atmosphere is also busy and urgent. " Seeing that fishing boats catch a lot of sea crabs, we are very happy. This not only brings a good income to fishermen, but also maintains stable jobs at purchasing facilities. Currently, the supply of seafood is scarce due to the impact of the weather, we also focus on purchasing, both ensuring the consumption of products for fishermen and supplying the freshest products to the market " - Ms. Vo Thi Suong (employee of Nam Lan seafood purchasing facility) shared.
Crabs and other seafood are classified, preserved fresh, and transported to provinces/cities across the country.
A good crab season from post-storm offshore trips not only brings a good income to fishermen, providing an abundant source of seafood to the market, but also contributes to creating motivation for boats to continue their journeys at sea, promoting local socio-economic development.
