Man gets female hand transplant

The 45-year-old man, who had the first successful hand transplant in New Delhi, was discharged from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on March 7. He lost both his hands in a train accident in 2020. Coming from a poor background, his life seemed to have reached a dead end.

However, a miracle happened. The hand of Meena Mehta, a former administrative director of a prominent school in South Delhi, who was declared brain dead, was transplanted to the 45-year-old man. During her lifetime, Mehta had pledged that her organs would be used after her death.

Her kidneys, liver and corneas changed the lives of three others. Her hands revived an artist's dream after a serious accident.

World - Rare: Man receives female hand transplant

In addition, it is impossible not to mention the dedication of the team of doctors who completed the hand transplant surgery. The surgery lasted more than 12 hours, including connecting all the arteries, muscles, tendons and nerves between the donor hand and the recipient's arm.

It is known that hand transplant surgery is a very complicated procedure, requiring experience and high expertise of doctors.

Previously, in 2020, a hand transplant surgery from a man to a woman also caused a stir in Indian public opinion.

A young woman in India who lost both arms in a bus accident has received arms from a dark-skinned donor.

After an accident in 2016, 18-year-old Shreya Siddanagowder in India had her arm amputated below the elbow. In 2017, she underwent a 13-hour transplant surgery performed by a team of 20 surgeons and 16 anesthesiologists.

Her transplanted hand came from a 21-year-old man who had died in a cycling accident. Over the next year and a half, physical therapy improved Siddanagowder’s control of her arm and hand. But remarkably, the deceased man’s transplanted hand unexpectedly became slimmer over time than it had been at the time of the transplant.

But that doesn't stop there, there's another surprising change: the skin on her new limbs is lighter in color, while the man's hands are darker. Therefore, it matches Siddanagowder's skin tone better.

Doctors treating Siddanagowder suspect that her body produces less melanin than her donor, which could explain the lightening of her new hand (melanin is the pigment that gives skin color).
