The poor wife's plea brought us to Nghe An General Hospital, where her husband - Mr. Ngo Sy Tam (51 years old) - was being treated.

Mr. Tam lay on the hospital bed, his face gaunt and rough. Mrs. Chau was rubbing her husband's swollen belly, which looked like a woman 5 months pregnant, to help ease his pain. A cough that seemed to be suppressed still came out of Mr. Tam's throat. Mrs. Chau panicked: "Try to hold it in, don't cough, the blood will come out again."

She hurriedly took a bottle of essential oil and rubbed it on her husband's chest and neck. The weather had turned cold these past few days, and Mr. Tam had been coughing more. Every time she heard him cough, Mrs. Chau was haunted by the image of her husband's face and shirt covered in blood...

"In early November, after his insurance treatment ended, he was discharged from the hospital. I planned to let him stay at home for a few days, arrange the money, and then take him to the district hospital to complete the procedures to transfer him to the provincial hospital to receive insurance. That night, Mr. Tam had a severe coughing fit, clutching his chest and coughing, his body was limp. Blood gushed from his mouth, wetting his neck and shirt. I frantically took him to the hospital.

At the provincial hospital, the doctors performed an endoscopy on his throat. I stood next to him and saw a mass of red blood on the screen and fainted. The doctor said he had 5 liters of blood in his body, but he had lost 2 liters," Ms. Chau still shuddered as she recounted.

Mrs. Chau and her husband were unable to have children. After many years of unsuccessful treatment, she had to accept the harsh reality that she was not blessed with children.

But fate still dealt a painful blow to her family. In 2008, Mr. Tam was diagnosed with cirrhosis, but the family had no money so they only took traditional medicine for treatment. By 2015, the disease had progressed so badly that Mr. Tam went to the hospital.

Mr. Tam was sick and weak and could not do anything. The family's economy depended on Mrs. Chau's job of collecting and purchasing scrap. Mrs. Chau collected garbage and raised a pig to cover the cost of living and medicine for her husband.

Since the beginning of 2023, Mr. Tam's condition has worsened. Cirrhosis complications led to stage 1 hepatic encephalopathy and gastrointestinal bleeding, forcing him to go to the hospital frequently. With no one at home, Mrs. Chau had to quit her job to take care of her husband. After taking her husband to the hospital and preparing everything, she hurriedly took the bus home to find money.

Hobbling on her painful leg due to a traffic accident, Mrs. Chau went to the cabinet and pulled out some prescriptions and medicine bags.

"Each prescription lasts for 3 days, nearly 4 million VND. Now, he still owes 50 million VND. He has been sick for more than ten years, I have asked to borrow from all his brothers, friends, neighbors.

Besides, for an old, sick couple like me, with children to support, no one dares to lend me a lot, they are afraid they cannot pay back, I do not dare to blame them. Many times when I was in a tight spot, I took the risk of borrowing a few hundred dollars from patients and relatives of patients in the same room, but they gave me half, I only had to pay back half of the loan amount," she choked up.

Every day, Mrs. Chau buys 20,000 VND worth of porridge, divided into 3 meals for her husband. Actually, Mr. Tam cannot eat much, living mainly on medicine. As for her, she eats bread and potatoes to get through the day.

According to Mr. Dau Xuan Truong - Chairman of the People's Committee of Dien Ky Commune, Dien Chau District - the family of Mr. Ngo Sy Tam and Mrs. Dang Thi Chau is in a particularly difficult situation in the commune. Due to illness and constant hospitalization, the couple does not have the means to repair the house their grandparents left behind, which is dilapidated and damaged. Recently, the local government, mass organizations and relatives have mobilized and donated to help rebuild the house so that the couple can have a safe place to live.

It wasn’t too cold, but Mr. Tam kept shivering. Mrs. Chau pulled a thin blanket over her husband and hugged his painful ankle. The accident two years ago left her with a broken ankle. The doctor told her to limit her movements, but she used the money for medicine and her husband’s porridge to go out and collect scrap. Perhaps that was why the wound never healed, tormenting her with pain every time the weather changed.

"Look at his stomach, it's swollen like a drum. The doctor said to drain the fluid but he's too weak, so I'm asking for a "delay". I don't know if he'll make it through Tet," her voice dropped.

Hearing his wife speak, Mr. Tam quietly turned his face toward the window. He accepted his fate, but if only he had a child to keep her company...
