The dilapidated, old house of Ms. Dinh Thi Thanh Tuyen (born in 1984) and Mr. To Danh (born in 1979) is located deep in an alley in Ha Trai village, Son Kim 1 commune, Huong Son district, Ha Tinh province. When asked about Ms. Tuyen's family situation, all the neighbors sympathized.
Unlike many other girls, Ms. Tuyen had to raise her mentally ill younger sister before she got married. After getting married, Ms. Tuyen took her younger sister with her. She then gave birth to two children, the youngest of whom was mute, deaf, and had a congenital heart disease. In early 2023, she was shocked to receive the bad news that her husband had liver cancer.
Mr. Danh is currently being treated in the hospital, but Ms. Tuyen has not been able to find such a large amount of money to save her husband.
Ms. Thanh Tuyen and Mr. Doanh are originally from Duc Tho district. In 2006, after getting married, due to the early death of their parents, Mr. Nguyen Giang Nam (Ms. Tuyen's uncle - PV) gave them a garden in Ha Trai village, Son Kim 1 commune to build a house and start a business.
“When I gave them the land and they built a house, Tuyen herself had to take care of a younger sister who had been mentally ill since childhood. Their life was extremely difficult because neither of them had jobs. In 2010, when they gave birth to their second son, he was born with congenital heart disease, deafness and muteness. He had suffered so much, but God still did not let him go. Now, his husband has cancer, and so many burdens have piled up,” said Mr. Nguyen Giang Nam sadly.
Ms. Tuyen's family's dilapidated house does not have a single valuable item.
Knowing that reporters and journalists were coming to learn about Ms. Tuyen's family situation, many neighbors proactively came to tell us about the hardships and sufferings of Ms. Tuyen and Mr. Danh's family. Everyone in the neighborhood hoped that Ms. Tuyen's family would receive help from everyone to get back on their feet.
“Everyone in this village loves her (referring to Tuyen and her husband, Danh - PV). Seeing Tuyen take care of her mentally ill younger sister since her parents passed away makes us admire her very much. Many nights the whole village went out to look for her. Because she forgot to close the door, she ran away for several days, but she and her husband were determined to find her. For nearly 20 years, watching her take care of her sister, we couldn’t hold back our tears. Now her son has heart disease and her husband has cancer, it’s a real disaster. I don’t know if Tuyen can hold on,” said Tho, Tuyen’s neighbor.
Sister Tuyen has raised her mentally ill younger brother since before she got married.
In Tuyen’s dilapidated house, Danh did not have any valuable items. The coffee table and bed were placed makeshiftly next to the room of his younger sister Dinh Thi Thiep (born 1992), who had suffered from mental illness since childhood.
“My parents died early, leaving me with a mentally ill younger sister. When I got married, I brought my mentally ill younger sister to my husband's house. Luckily, my husband understood and encouraged us to overcome it. In 2007, my husband and I gave birth to our first son who was healthy. But in 2010, when our second son was born, he had a congenital heart disease, was mute and deaf. My husband and I told each other to try to earn a living to treat our child, but we couldn't. In early 2023, while working as a construction worker, my husband complained of pain and went to the doctor. The district and provincial doctors advised me to go to the central hospital for a check-up. When I held the results of my husband's liver cancer in my hand, I was shocked. The doctor said that with my husband's condition, to save his life, he had to have urgent surgery, but I didn't know where to get the money," Ms. Tuyen said in tears.
Ms. Tuyen's dilapidated house is where she lives day by day.
“The worry about daily bread and butter is not enough. Now we have to bear the additional burden of our husband’s terrible illness. As a single woman, I don’t know if the family can survive. We, the neighbors, visit here often, and we will try to support them if we can. Now the biggest worry is having money for surgery to save Danh’s life,” Tran Quoc Chien, a neighbor of Tuyen and her husband, sadly shared.
Mr. Hoang Van Thu, Chairman of the People's Committee of Son Kim 1 Commune, said: "Ms. Tuyen and Mr. Danh's family situation is extremely difficult. In early 2023, the family discovered that her husband had liver cancer. Now, in a family where the husband has a serious illness, a child has a congenital heart disease, and is also raising a mentally ill sister, it is really difficult for Ms. Tuyen. The local government has also directed organizations to care for and help Ms. Tuyen's family. Through this, we also hope that benefactors and philanthropists will support and help mentally and materially so that Ms. Tuyen can have the conditions to have surgery for her husband soon."
