Many opportunities to help break the record for agricultural, forestry and fishery exports

(Chinhphu.vn) - Despite being continuously affected by natural disasters and storms in September, Vietnam's agricultural sector still maintained strong growth momentum, especially in the export sector.

Today, October 6, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment held a regular press conference. Speaking at the press conference, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Phung Duc Tien emphasized: "The agricultural sector is facing a great opportunity to set a new export milestone, from 67 to 70 billion USD this year."

Total export turnover in the first 9 months of 2025 will reach more than 52 billion USD, an increase of 14% over the same period in 2024, opening up the opportunity to reach the 70 billion USD mark - a new record in the history of the industry.

According to the report, the harvested rice area reached 5.5 million hectares, up 0.5%, with an estimated output of nearly 34.8 million tons. Although the pig herd decreased slightly by 0.6% due to African swine fever, the output of fresh meat still reached more than 4 million tons, up 4.6%. The poultry herd increased by 3.7%, producing fresh meat of more than 1.9 million tons.

In the forestry sector, the country planted 207,000 hectares of new forests, an increase of 10.6%, and exploited wood output reached nearly 18 million m³, an increase of 8.7%. Aquaculture continued to grow steadily with an output of 7.26 million tons, of which shrimp increased by 5.8%.

In September 2025, the export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products reached 6.35 billion USD, bringing the total value in 9 months to 52.31 billion USD. Of which, agricultural products: 28.5 billion USD; aquatic products: 8.12 billion USD; forestry products: 13.41 billion USD; livestock: 447.5 million USD.

Export markets expanded significantly: Asia accounted for nearly 44%, the US 23%, Europe more than 14%, while exports to Africa nearly doubled.

Many key products continued to make breakthroughs such as: Coffee: 6.98 billion USD (+61%), average export price 5,658 USD/ton; Rubber: 2.32 billion USD (+11%), mainly exported to China; Cashew nuts: 3.75 billion USD (+18.9%); Pepper: increased 29% in value despite decreased output; Vegetables and fruits: 6.22 billion USD (+10%), the largest market is China; Wood and wood products: 12.52 billion USD, accounting for more than half of the market share in the US.

Rice exports alone reached 7 million tons, but the value decreased by 18.5% due to the average price falling to 509 USD/ton. The industry's trade balance reached a surplus of 15.93 billion USD, up 17.6% over the same period in 2024.

Seize opportunities, expand global market

According to Deputy Director of the Department of International Cooperation (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) Vu Duc Dam Quang, Vietnam's agricultural trade is shifting from "expanding in quantity" to "improving in quality", towards global standards.

Vietnam is currently negotiating six new trade agreements with the Middle East (Halal), Latin America, Africa and Central Asia; and is actively removing barriers to meet strict regulations such as the EU's EUDR and the US's control of the origin of wood and seafood.

Public-private partnership (PPP) models between international businesses and farmers in the coffee, pepper, rice, and seafood sectors are helping to form transparent, traceable, and emission-reducing supply chains.

Mr. Quang said that in the coming time, Vietnam will prioritize FDI capital flows associated with green transformation, encourage technology transfer, develop carbon credits and extended producer responsibility (EPR) - considered a "green passport" for Vietnamese agricultural products in the international market.

Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien commented that if the export turnover rate of 5 billion USD/month is maintained, the export turnover in 2025 will reach 67 billion USD; and if it reaches 6 billion USD/month, the industry can break the record of 70 billion USD.

"In the context of a volatile world , natural disasters and increasing trade barriers, maintaining stable production and achieving high growth is a great effort of the entire industry," he said.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has identified the long-term goal of developing green, ecological, circular agriculture, applying science, technology and renewable energy to ensure sustainable growth.

According to Deputy Director of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection Nguyen Quang Hieu, the recent storm and heavy rain affected about 96,400 hectares of crops, including: Rice: 40,400 hectares; Vegetables: 23,200 hectares; Industrial and perennial crops: 29,100 hectares; Fruit trees: 3,700 hectares.

The North Central and Northern regions alone have 1.1 million hectares of summer-autumn rice, about 40,000 hectares of which were affected but not completely lost. The North Central region has currently harvested 87% of the area, expected to be completed in the first half of October; the Northern region will finish harvesting at the end of the month.

The results of the first 9 months of the year show that agriculture continues to be the backbone of the economy, not only ensuring domestic food security but also contributing to a large trade surplus. With the current growth momentum, the milestone of 70 billion USD in agricultural, forestry and fishery exports by 2025 is completely feasible - marking a new step forward for Vietnamese agriculture in the global market.
