The article below will help you equip yourself with knowledge before getting into the water, and answer the most searched question: "Where is the best and safest place to go SUP?"

1. Preparation for SUP paddling – Things not to be missed

Preparation when paddling SUP is not only about equipment, but also knowledge, health and alertness. (Photo: Collected)

A smooth SUP paddle session starts with proper and complete preparation:
Choose the right board: Inflatable boards are flexible and easy to carry, while hardboards are more stable for fast movements or intensive play.
1.1. Check the equipment carefully

  • With inflatable boards: Make sure to inflate to the correct pressure (usually 12–15 PSI), no air leaks, no glue peeling.
  • For hardwood: Check for cracks or peeling of the anti-slip coating.

1.2. Safety equipment:

  • Life jacket fits well and must be worn at all times while paddling.
  • Leash to keep board from drifting away if you fall.
  • Waterproof bag if carrying phone, wallet, sunglasses.

2. Basic SUP paddling techniques – Foundation for beginners

Mastering SUP paddling techniques will help you maintain balance, save energy and avoid injury:

  • Board position: Start by kneeling on the board, keeping your back straight. Once you feel stable, slowly stand up, looking straight ahead with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  • How to hold and use the paddle: Hold it correctly - the curved part of the paddle is facing forward; Do not use your hands alone - Use the strength from your shoulders and body to avoid fatigue.
  • Switch hands while paddling: Switch hands every 4–6 strokes to keep the board in a stable direction.

3. SUP Safety Notes – Protect yourself and others

Here are some SUP safety tips you should always keep in mind:

  • Always keep an eye on the weather: Avoid paddling during thunderstorms, heavy rain, strong winds, or strong currents.
  • Do not paddle alone in deserted areas: Go in groups or with a guide.
  • Keep your distance from other vehicles: Such as canoes, motorboats, or groups of people rowing near you.
  • Always follow the tour guide (if any): They know the terrain and currents well, and will handle any problems promptly.
  • Stay healthy and stay alert: SUP paddling seems easy but still consumes a lot of energy. Therefore, you should always bring water, sun protection, and a wide-brimmed hat. Do not paddle when you have just eaten, drank alcohol, or are tired. If you feel tired, go to shore to rest, do not try to paddle again.

4. Where to go SUP? Suggestions for beautiful, safe, and accessible locations

Looking for a chill yet safe and accessible SUP spot? Here are suggestions from North to South, spanning across regions, each offering its own unique and memorable experience.

In the North, Hoa Binh Lake is the ideal choice for those who want to combine SUP with wild landscapes and fresh air. When paddling from Hien Luong commune to Thien Duong Cape or the journey towards Ngoi Hoa Bay, you will feel the wonderful interplay between the calm lake water and the majestic surrounding mountains. If you want to explore the closed sea, Lan Ha Bay near Cat Ba Island will offer a quieter SUP experience, with less touristy areas and pristine natural scenery.

Central Vietnam – SUP at Man Thai Beach ( Da Nang )

Man Thai Beach in Da Nang is one of the most prominent SUP locations in the Central region. Young people often come here early in the morning (5am-8am) or in the afternoon (4pm-6pm) to enjoy SUP paddling to watch the sunrise, when the sea surface is calm and the clear blue water reflects the brilliant golden light. The scene of Man Thai Beach is like a "SUP market in the middle of the sea", where you can chat with people with similar interests, post extremely cool "virtual life" photos right on the SUP board.

This activity is attracting a lot of tourists, especially young people, and has become a summer trend in Da Nang. However, to ensure safety, the city requires that rowing is only allowed within the prescribed time frame, absolutely not done when the sea is rough, mandatory wearing of life jackets, leg protection belts, and only operating in permitted areas with clear instructions.

Ho Chi Minh City – Urban SUP is also very attractive

If you like nature in the middle of the city, Saigon SUP Club in Binh Quoi gives you the feeling of paddling in the middle of a coconut forest, very relaxing. Paddling SUP through the canals at Saigon Paddle Station (District 7) is also an interesting choice to enjoy the peaceful space right in the city center.

Western Region – Phu Quoc: SUP in clear blue sea, great virtual life

Phu Quoc is a must-try destination if you want to paddleboard between blue sea, white sand and colorful coral. Water areas such as Bai Can or Ran Can are so shallow and clear that you can see the coral under your board. Many tours also combine SUP paddling with snorkeling, creating a complete sea experience. Rach Vem fishing village, Cua Can river, and Sao and Khem beaches are also beautiful SUP addresses for you to check-in amidst pristine natural scenery.

SUP is more than just a sport; it’s a way to connect with nature. Whether you’re in the mountainous North, the sunny Central, bustling Ho Chi Minh City , or the peaceful Phu Quoc Island , there are plenty of great options to get you started on your water adventure. Now you know where to go SUPing — it’s just a matter of planning, getting ready, and getting going!
