On October 6, the General Statistics Office reported on Vietnam's trade and service activities in the first nine months of 2025, showing that the demand for domestic goods and services increased sharply, especially during major holidays, along with a strong increase in international visitors. This contributed to boosting the total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue of the whole society by 9.5% over the same period last year. In particular, accommodation, food and beverage and travel services recorded outstanding growth.
In September alone, the total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue at current prices was estimated at VND598.7 trillion, up 2% over the previous month and up 11.3% over the same period last year. In particular, key commodity groups all recorded significant growth over the same period last year. Specifically, revenue from the garment group increased by 15.2%, food and foodstuffs increased by 13.8%, cultural and educational items increased by 11.4%, household appliances, tools and equipment increased by 10%. In particular, tourism-related service industries continued to flourish, in which revenue from accommodation and food services increased by 15.0% and tourism and travel increased by 19.7%.
In the third quarter, total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue at current prices were estimated at nearly VND1,760 trillion, up 2.6% over the second quarter and up 10.1% over the same period last year.
The above results contributed to promoting this economic sector to grow steadily in 9 months. Accordingly, the total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue at current prices is estimated at over VND 5.17 million billion, up 9.5% over the same period last year (increased by 8.8% in the same period in 2024). Excluding the price factor, the actual growth rate still reached 7.2% (compared to 5.8% in the same period in 2024), which shows that people's purchasing power continues to improve significantly.
Specifically, retail sales of goods in the first nine months are estimated at nearly VND3.95 trillion, up 8.3% over the same period. Of which, food and foodstuff groups increased by 10.3%, garments increased by 8.2%, cultural and educational items increased by 8.1%, household appliances, tools and equipment increased by 6.7%. This growth spread across localities with Da Nang increasing by 9.4%, Can Tho increasing by 8.8%, Hanoi increasing by 8.4%, Ho Chi Minh City and Hai Phong both increasing by 8.3%.
The bright spot in the consumption picture is the breakthrough of the tourism and related services industry. Revenue from accommodation and catering services in the first nine months is estimated at VND624.4 trillion, up 14.8% over the same period. Of which, Da Nang leads with an increase of 18.1%, followed by Ho Chi Minh City (18.0%), Can Tho (14.2%), Hai Phong (12.0%) and Hanoi (11.9%). The tourism industry grew even stronger, estimated at VND69.6 trillion, up 20.5% over the same period last year.
Explaining this growth momentum, the General Statistics Office said that since the beginning of the year, many localities have actively implemented tourism stimulus programs and developed many new types of tourism, attracting both domestic and foreign tourists. Typically, Ho Chi Minh City increased by 24.3%, Hanoi increased by 21.9%, Quang Ninh increased by 20.2%, leading localities in tourism revenue. Other service revenue also recorded an increase of 12.1% in nine months, estimated at VND534.1 trillion, showing the diversity and recovery of different types of services. In particular, Hue, Bac Ninh, and Hai Phong are localities with high growth rates in other service revenue./.
