Pharmaceutical factory explosion in India, 15 people killed

"As of now, the death toll is 15 and is likely to rise. Nearly 40 others have been injured. Rescue operations are underway," said police colonel M. Deepika.

The fire broke out in the afternoon at the manufacturing plant of Escientia Advanced Sciences, which has been operational since 2019, in the state's Anakapalli district, according to district chief minister Vijaya Krishnan.

"The injured have been shifted to nearby hospitals... there appears to have been an explosion at the chemical reactor," Ms Krishnan's office said, adding that the blast occurred during lunchtime at the plant.

Last year, two people were killed and five others injured in a similar fire at a solvent reactor of the Sahithi Pharma plant also in Anakapalli district.
