Of which, the aquaculture sector grew impressively with an output of 885,628 tons, exceeding the plan by 13.1% and increasing by 10.8% over the same period.

Specifically, the output of tra fish was 503,450 tons, brackish water shrimp was 134,556 tons, fish raised in cages at sea was 3,824 tons... The output of seafood exploited in fishing grounds reached the annual plan, with 320,918 tons, reaching 99.9%.

An Giang's fisheries sector maintained a stable growth momentum in the first 9 months, contributing to creating a solid foundation for the province's socio-economic development. Despite facing great difficulties and challenges from unusual weather, epidemics and pressure on preventing and combating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, the province has proposed a series of synchronous solutions towards the goal of sustainable development of this economic sector and international integration.

Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of An Giang, Le Huu Toan, shared that the fisheries economy maintained a stable growth momentum in the past 9 months. It is expected that the output of exploitation and aquaculture in 2025 will reach over 1.6 million tons; of which, tra fish is expected to be 648,961 tons, brackish water shrimp is over 155,000 tons, fish raised in cages at sea is 100,000 tons... and marine fisheries exploitation exceeded the annual plan.

Despite positive results, An Giang's fisheries sector is still under pressure. The current situation of fisheries exploitation is facing difficulties due to declining resources, leading to many fishing vessels being forced to stay ashore.

The aquaculture sector also faced losses due to disease outbreaks, with brackish water shrimp losing more than 1,132 hectares due to white spot disease, acute hepatopancreatic necrosis and environmental impacts. 547 fingerlings of fish raised in sea cages lost due to nerve necrosis. Freshwater fish suffered from hepatopancreatic necrosis and hemorrhage over an area of more than 47 hectares.

Besides, aquaculture development is not stable, the rate of application of high technology in marine farming, especially offshore farming, is still low.

Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of An Giang, Le Huu Toan, emphasized that in the context of the whole country making efforts to remove the "yellow card" warning of the European Commission (EC), the province has proposed many key tasks and solutions for the last 3 months of 2025 and the next phase in the development of the fisheries industry, with IUU prevention and control being given top priority in order to seriously and effectively implement the Central Government's direction and prepare for the 5th EC Inspection Delegation.

Accordingly, the province continues to strengthen patrolling, inspection and control at peak times at sea, strictly handling violations by fishing vessels. Functional units coordinate to invite ship owners and captains of fishing vessels that lose signals from their journey monitoring devices or cross the fishing boundary at sea to work and strictly handle them according to regulations, continue to deploy the electronic traceability system for exploited aquatic products (eCDT).

The province is implementing a project to convert fishermen, especially those with small-capacity fishing boats, to create new, suitable livelihoods; eliminating destructive exploitation methods such as using electric shocks and toxic chemicals.

An Giang province continues to implement many solutions to develop aquaculture in a safe, sustainable and effective direction, especially encouraging the application of high technology in farming.

Regarding offshore fish cage farming, the province is converting from traditional farming to using HDPE plastic cages, offshore farming, combined with modern technology. The province is replicating effective industrial shrimp, shrimp - rice, black tiger shrimp - giant freshwater prawn farming models, especially models applying high technology to increase productivity and income.

In addition, to ensure output, the province promotes large-scale production under contracts with foreign corporations and markets, aiming to improve specialized and sustainable production capacity, promoting the international integration of the fisheries industry. The province promotes seafood processing and export, creating key, local products with high quality and economic value.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of An Giang, in the period of 2026 - 2030, the province aims to achieve a total aquatic product output of more than 9.2 million tons, an increase of 24.2% compared to the period of 2021 - 2025; the aquaculture area is expected to increase by 47.1%; the output of fish raised in cages at sea will increase by 46.1%, shrimp will increase by 42.9%, other aquatic products (mollusks, crabs) will increase by 45.65%.

To achieve this goal, the province is proactive in planning and building aquaculture projects in the direction of marine, coastal and island aquaculture. At the same time, restructuring the seafood exploitation sector in the direction of not increasing the number of fishing vessels and encouraging investment in developing high-value fishing occupations. Promoting aquaculture, reducing exploitation, and linking with the protection of aquatic resources.

On the other hand, the province expands the area of brackish water shrimp farming according to the industrial model; develops ecological and organic farming in mangrove forests, coastal saline shrimp-rice areas; develops aquaculture in harmony with marine ecotourism, seafood processing, and protects and develops resources.

The province invests in upgrading fishing ports, fishing wharves, boat anchorage areas, well-organizing fishing logistics services; forming a synchronous fisheries infrastructure system, connecting supporting industries and fishing logistics services. The province promotes marine economic development, effectively implementing the project to develop An Giang into a strong marine economic center of the country; building a large fisheries center, a focal center associated with raw material areas for aquatic products in coastal areas.
