Speaking as the two leaders sat by the fireplace in the Oval Office, President Biden congratulated Mr Trump on his victory and pledged to uphold tradition and ensure a smooth transition of power.
“As we have said, in the interest of a smooth transition, we will do everything we can to ensure he gets the support he needs,” Mr. Biden stressed.
For his part, President-elect Trump also affirmed that everything will be done smoothly and he appreciates those efforts.
According to White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre, during the meeting at the White House, the incumbent President and the President-elect "discussed important issues of national security and domestic policy."
Ms Karine Jean-Pierre added that the meeting lasted about two hours and was "very sincere, polite and substantive".

This was the first significant meeting between Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump since their debate in June. Then, on September 11, Mr. Biden, Mr. Trump, and Ms. Harris appeared together at the site of the 2001 terrorist attack in New York.
Earlier, First Lady Jill Biden joined President Biden in welcoming President-elect Trump when he arrived at the White House. She handed him a handwritten letter congratulating former First Lady Melania Trump, in which she expressed her team's readiness to support the transition process.
