The United States is Taiwan's most important arms supplier. The two sides do not have a formal military agreement, but the US has a law requiring Washington to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself, according to Reuters.

Asked about Donald Trump's comments, Taiwan's President Cheuk Wing-chai said the island was ready to take on more responsibility for its own defense and was gradually increasing military spending.

In April, the US Congress passed a bill providing $95 billion in aid to Ukraine, Israel and Washington's partners, including the island of Taiwan.

China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has repeatedly stressed that it does not rule out the use of force against the island.
