Developing PlantGPT - the first AI assistant for plant genetics

PlantGPT is designed as an intelligent question-and-answer system to serve scientists who are working to decode gene function, improve crop quality... and adapt to climate change.

Chinese researchers have developed PlantGPT - the first Artificial Intelligence (AI) assistant specialized for functional genomics in plants, with the ability to conduct in-depth analysis and accurately answer specialized questions.

According to China Science Daily, PlantGPT is the product of a consortium of scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, South China Agricultural University, and Tsinghua University. The research results were published in the journal Advanced Science.

Based on deep data and expertise from Arabidopsis, the most popular model plant in biological research, PlantGPT is designed as an intelligent question-and-answer system for scientists working to decode gene function, improve crop quality, increase yield, enhance pest and disease resistance, and adapt to climate change.

While traditional biological databases require users to search by gene name or specific trait, PlantGPT offers a breakthrough experience with natural language interaction, multi-omics data integration, and interpretation of complex regulatory mechanisms—something that many current computational tools are limited to.

PlantGPT was built with three core goals: Disseminate agricultural knowledge to the public; support young researchers in accessing and understanding plant genomes; and provide strategic suggestions for veteran scientists in research planning.

With its open-source structure, easy transferability, and continuous updates, PlantGPT not only improves research efficiency but also opens up the potential for AI applications in many other specialized fields.

The achievement marks a major step forward in the application of AI and life sciences. PlantGPT is currently freely available online and will soon be expanded to support more plant species, as well as serve the field of synthetic biology./.
