French inventor Franky Zapata has unveiled a new personal flying vehicle with an egg-shaped cockpit that can fly at altitudes of up to 2,900 metres. A two-hour journey by car during rush hour can be cut down to 10 minutes with this Airscooter, the Mail reported on August 21.

Zapata shared a design image of the Airscooter and said the vehicle is in development. The Airscooter is a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft, meaning it can take to the air without needing a runway. It is a hybrid electric vehicle, using a combination of fuel and electricity to spin six rotors mounted around the top of its egg-shaped cockpit. Thanks to its hybrid electric propulsion system, the Airscooter can fly for two hours, longer than any other VTOL model on the market.

The joystick-operated cockpit allows anyone to easily take the wheel after a short training session. The ultra-lightweight design means the Airscooter weighs just 115 kg, roughly the same as two adults. Although it is intended to replace cars, the Airscooter will not be sold commercially. Instead, people will pay a fee to drive it for 40 minutes and enjoy the scenery out the window.

Starting next year, Zapata will open flight centers in the US, offering leisure flights to customers. The first center will be in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.
