From Long An, I drove a motorbike for more than an hour to take pictures of a coffee shop in the West (By: Cam Tien).
Early in the morning, Ni Coffee Shop on Nguyen Dinh Chinh Street is already crowded with customers enjoying coffee. The main space of the shop is a 3-room tiled-roof wooden house, with a garden in front of the door, recreating the scene of the West many years ago, making many people excited.
The spacious yard is green with squash trellis, along with neatly planted vegetable and rice beds, bringing a peaceful feeling of the countryside.
This coffee shop has been open for just over a month, and is the brainchild of young people, hoping to create a Western space, a place for people to gather and reminisce about old stories.
Mr. Thanh An - the person in charge of the restaurant's communications - said that the 3-room tiled house was completely newly built on an empty land. The owner himself referred to the space of old Western houses to come up with decoration ideas. In particular, the owner spent 6 months looking for old items to arrange in the restaurant.
“The tables and chairs, the charcoal iron, the wood stove, and the cupboards are things that remind many people in the West of their childhood. Some of them are many years old, and some of them are items that the shop owner found samples of and asked the craftsman to make to resemble old items,” An shared.
Family photos pasted on the wooden walls are the way people in the West in the past kept memories. According to Mr. Thanh An, the above pictures are all old photos of the shop owner's relatives.
Mr. Vinh Khang ( Dong Thap ) - a guest who arrived early in the morning - said the unique features of an old Western house at the restaurant reminded him of his childhood in his hometown.
“The old desk, the certificates of merit, the handwritten timetables, and the wooden chairs remind me of my school days. In addition, the place that makes me most nostalgic is the kitchen with the wood stoves, pot holders, baskets, etc. commonly found in the old West. Nowadays, kitchens are rarely like that,” Mr. Khang commented.
This was Mr. Khang’s first time coming to the shop, he thought it was an interesting place to meet friends and reminisce. However, he also commented that the coffee in the shop was a bit sweet, with a modern taste, unlike the old coffee.
“Moreover, if the shop changed the new style cups to the old-fashioned ones and didn't use straws, it would be more like the West,” said Mr. Khang.
At the end of the year, this coffee shop also arranges apricot and peach branches to create a spring atmosphere, creating a space for young people to take souvenir photos in ao dai.
The shop is currently open 24/7, selling basic drinks, prices ranging from 39,000 VND to 65,000 VND. Every Saturday, the shop also has exciting artistic activities such as traditional music, lottery...
Ms. Diem Thy (in Long An) really liked seeing the image of the shop on social networks, so she decided to wake up early with her friends and travel more than 1 hour to get here.
“My friends and I set off at 6am. We arrived at the shop, put on makeup, did our hair, changed into Ao Dai and took photos together. The shop was spacious, airy, with many beautiful photo angles. We went a bit far but brought back many beautiful photos, so it was worth it,” Thy shared.
