Singer Ha Anh Tuan and the successors of Xam art

At the beginning of the journey, he sings with the girls who are the heirs of the fading art of Xam, on a large stage at the foot of a sacred mountain. From there, the film seeks the answer: “What is the origin?”

The journey brought storyteller Ha Anh Tuan to the studio of “As if there had never been a separation” - a television program that has been continuously searching for the roots of Vietnamese people for nearly two decades. Here, he witnessed reunions after half a century of wandering. Among them, there was a special reunion of a son returning from faraway France.

The film was filmed across Ninh Binh , from the heart of the ancient capital Hoa Lu, famous landmarks such as Van Long lagoon, Ma Yen mountain, Tam Coc, Thai Vi temple, Bai Dinh ancient temple, Cuc Phuong national park, to the primary school in Yen Phong commune.

Storyteller Ha Anh Tuan, the appearance of world music "legend" Kitaro, characters from the show "As if there had never been a separation" and the ordinary people of Ninh Binh.

The film's music, with exclusive compositions by musician Vo Thien Thanh, the immortal melodies of Kitaro, and traditional Xam Thap Am melodies... all paint a story of origin.

Some characters in the movie

Brilliant Horizon was made by Lan Nguyen - the director who released a music documentary about musician Tran Tien called Color of Withered Grass - released in 2020. Another outstanding film of hers was also inspired by the music concert called Healing Wounds, depicting the "wounds" of 4 special characters (social activist Nguyen Thi Van, musician Ngoc Le, conservationist Nguyen Van Thai, director - doctor - war reporter Nguyen Thi Xuan Phuong) with different lives, seemingly unrelated, but there is an invisible thread connecting them into a story about "wounds".

Brilliant Horizon is my own complicated journey in Ninh Binh, trying to understand my own identity. I was loved and guided by that land to find the answer”, director Lan Nguyen shared about the process of making the film.

The documentary Brilliant Horizon will have its premiere at 9am on September 14 at the Central Scientific Documentary Film Studio (456 Hoang Hoa Tham Street, Ba Dinh, Hanoi). Free admission.

The Europe - Vietnam Documentary Film Festival is organized annually by EUNIC (European Union of Cultural Organizations) in collaboration with the Central Scientific Documentary Film Studio.

With the significant milestone of 2025, the documentaries selected for screening this year have a “current” meaning, with 7 films from European countries and 7 Vietnamese films. In particular, there is the participation of 4 independent documentaries and Brilliant Horizon is one of them.
