After many declarations, a NATO country is "on the way" to apply to join BRICS

On September 3, a spokesman for Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) said that the country is in the process of joining the BRICS group of leading emerging economies .

"Our president has repeatedly stated that we want to become a BRICS member... The process is currently underway," spokesman Omer Celik said.

Earlier in June, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he did not see BRICS membership as an alternative to membership in other groupings.

Türkiye is currently a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and has applied to join the EU for many years but has not been admitted.

Initiated in the early 2000s, BRIC is the investor acronym for the group of emerging countries including Brazil, Russia, India and China.

By 2009, the four countries had established the BRIC international forum. A year later, South Africa joined, and the group became BRICS. Earlier this year, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) joined the group.
