Sinner needs medical attention to advance to Australian Open quarterfinals

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí20/01/2025

(Dan Tri) - Jannik Sinner had some health problems when competing in the fourth round of the Australian Open against Holger Rune today (January 20). However, the Italian player still won after 4 sets.

On January 20, number one seed Jannik Sinner showed an amazing physical recovery to beat Holger Rune 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, winning a ticket to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open 2025.

The world number one skipped practice and consulted the tournament doctor before the match. Sinner will face the winner of Alex de Minaur and young American Alex Michelsen for a place in the semi-finals.

"I think we saw today that I was struggling a little bit physically. I knew it was going to be tough. You know, I was up against a tough opponent, but I was also up against myself a little bit," Sinner said in his post-match press conference.

The ATP Finals champion limped at times during the match, but Sinner dismissed suggestions that he was injured. "When I'm not feeling well on court, sometimes I tend to walk a little bit to the left. But it's not like I'm injured, it's not like that. It's just a little bit of a health issue, but overall I'm fine," Sinner added.

In Melbourne’s 32-degree heat, Sinner called a medical pause midway through the third set. After saving three break points early in the set, Sinner sat on a bench, pressed an ice towel to his face, and his right hand jerked uncontrollably.

Despite his exhaustion after returning from treatment, Sinner moved better as the set progressed. Aided by 16 unforced errors from Rune, Sinner won the third set and broke serve early in the fourth to reach the quarterfinals at Melbourne Park for the third time.

Sinner recovered so quickly that his fierce first serve in the first service game of the fourth set broke a metal ring attaching the bottom of the net to the court, leading to a 21-minute stoppage in play for repairs.

Sinner won 83% of first serve points compared to Rune's 66%, hitting 35 winners and 35 unforced errors compared to Rune's 31-54 record.

"Of course, the time on the court with me was a little bit of talking to the doctor. That helped me today, and it also shows that this tournament is organized very well," said Sinner. The Italian raised his record to 3-2 in the series with Rune.
