Live a healthy life of a hundred years thanks to discipline, the secret of an American bodybuilder

(Dan Tri) - For the past 80 years, Andrew Bostinto has been practicing bodybuilding and he still competes today at the age of 100. His secret to longevity is knowing what he wants to achieve and being determined to do it.

This May, just four months after his 100th birthday, Bostinto won the top title and championship belt at the National Gymnastics Association (NGA) bodybuilding competition. He is also the founder and CEO of the NGA, a nonprofit bodybuilding association.

“I never thought about getting older. This is what I do today, I will do tomorrow,” Bostinto tells CNBC Make It .

Bostinto has dedicated his life to bodybuilding. Before he was 13, he started working out in the park. From there, he became a gymnast and hand balancer. At 17, he was modeling.

He won the "Old America" ​​award at the age of 52 in 1977. Of all his accomplishments, however, the one he is most proud of is his 29 years of service in the United States Army.

His best advice for people who want to stay healthy and in shape for as long as possible is simple.

"The most important thing is to know what you want to achieve. Be committed to that goal. Be disciplined. Don't listen to people who say you're wasting your time. Don't listen to negative voices," he said.

Here's how Bostinto shaped his life to live a long, healthy life:

Diet

When he was training for competitions, he ate a high protein, low carbohydrate diet, two fruits, two salads and drank 15 glasses of water a day. Now, he doesn't need to eat as much as before, but he still focuses on getting plenty of protein. He often chooses scrambled eggs, yogurt, pasta and meatballs.

“I don’t overeat. I control everything I eat. I don’t want to eat greasy food. I also never smoke or drink alcohol,” Bostinto said.

Exercise

Even at 100, Bostinto still works out five or six days a week. “Physically, I’m in good shape. I do push-ups on the kitchen counter, and when I go to the gym, I do six or seven core exercises,” he said.

He tries to stick to the same training system he used for bodybuilding before, but sometimes he has to make adjustments, like when he was recovering from a stroke or when he had to deal with a nagging leg problem he had from his time in the military.

However, his workout routine is quite impressive for a 100-year-old.

“I do push-ups on parallel bars, pull-ups, knee bends and knee raises. I can do anything, anywhere, anytime,” he said.

Attitude to life

Bostinto knows what he's doing isn't normal for his age, but as long as he loves what he's doing, he'll keep doing it. Exercise has been a guiding light when he needed it.

"My mother never had a penny in her pocket. I never had a Christmas present or a birthday present. Never had anything. I was on my own," he said.

Where he started in life reminds him of how far he has come. For him, that is what motivates him to keep working and succeeding. Both in fitness and in life, Bostinto says he is motivated by the goals he wants to achieve for himself, not by the opinions or judgments of others.

“I don't train for other people. I train for myself,” Bostinto added.
