Sora is causing a stir again

Despite its limited release, OpenAI's Sora app topped the App Store's download charts, surpassing ChatGPT and Google Gemini.

A few days after its launch, OpenAI's Sora application rose to the top of the most downloaded charts on the US App Store, surpassing ChatGPT and Google Gemini.

According to data from Appfigures , Sora reached 56,000 downloads on the US App Store on its first day, making it into the top 3 most downloaded apps. By October 3, the app had risen to the top.

For comparison, ChatGPT reached the number one spot on its 2nd day of release. During the same period, other apps ranked included Grok (4th), Gemini (6th), Copilot (19th), and Claude (78th).

Between September 30 and October 1, Sora recorded a total of 164,000 downloads. This number surpasses many other AI applications in the same period, such as Anthropic's Claude (21,000) and Microsoft's Copilot (7,000), and is on par with xAI's Grok (56,000).

ChatGPT and Gemini had more impressive launches, with 81,000 and 80,000 downloads on the first day of release, respectively. To be most objective, Appfigures only compared downloads in the US and Canada, as the apps had different launch strategies.

ChatGPT, for example, initially launched on iOS, only for the US market. Grok, meanwhile, is limited to iOS users in the US, Australia, and India. Anthropic did not disclose details on which countries Claude will be released on day one.

Introduced on September 30, Sora can create short videos from AI models. Combining social networking features, the application allows you to “borrow” ideas from videos created by others, share them on your personal page and follow accounts.

Sora is currently only available on iOS, requiring an invite to join. Despite the limitations, the app still tops the free charts on the App Store.

“It’s been amazing to see how much collective creativity can reach. Our team is always working to improve and take feedback,” Bill Peebles, head of Sora at OpenAI, shared on social network X on October 3.

According to CNBC , Sora integrates OpenAI's latest video and audio generation model, called Sora 2. The company said the model is capable of generating footage and audio with "high fidelity." The first version of Sora was released in February 2024.

OpenAI highlighted several safety risk mitigation solutions surrounding the Sora app, including allowing users to control how their images are used on the platform.

Despite the fixes, some disturbing videos still appear on Sora, including a clip depicting CEO Sam Altman shoplifting, sparking debate about the app's usefulness, risks, and legality.

On social network X , Altman stressed that “it's easy to imagine bad scenarios of AI-generated videos,” leading users to fall into a spiral of “sloppy content.”

“Our team has put a lot of thought and effort into how to create interesting products without falling into that situation. We have many promising ideas,” said the OpenAI CEO.
