That is because the host country will collect a symbolic fee from units that need to broadcast the SEA Games, about 5,000 USD/unit (about 120 million VND, depending on the host country).
After the 31st congress in Vietnam in 2022, the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia has been moving towards selling broadcasting rights. At that time, many experts said that selling the copyright of the SEA Games was an "inevitable trend" in the development process. Copyright money will support the host country to have more funds to host the SEA Games better.
However, the host country Cambodia faced strong reactions when it intended to sell the copyright of SEA Games 32 at a high price. In the end, Cambodia decided to completely waive the broadcasting rights for other countries. But that did not happen again at SEA Games 33 in Thailand, when the host country required each unit that wanted to broadcast the Southeast Asian Games later this year to pay a fee of 20,000 USD (more than 500 million VND).
According to TV stations in Vietnam, this is not the TV copyright fee that the host country calls "broadcast participation fee". A representative of a TV station in Vietnam said that if considered in terms of the SEA Games used to be free to broadcast, the 20,000 USD offered by Thailand is quite high. But if compared to many other sporting events, this number is not too large and the stations can still meet it.
Another expert in the copyright field told Tuoi Tre on October 20: "The 33rd SEA Games Organizing Committee informed about collecting broadcasting participation fees a few months ago. Up to now, there are about 4-5 units in Vietnam that have sent official documents requesting to broadcast the 33rd SEA Games.
That shows that the fee of 20,000 USD is not too big an obstacle. This expert affirmed that Vietnam will definitely have the copyright for SEA Games 33 and there will even be many television units broadcasting together."
According to this expert, the copyright of SEA Games 33 will be announced in the near future. The current problem is that the units applying for broadcasting rights are planning to exploit, approach, and invest to bring the highest efficiency. Although the value of SEA Games is showing signs of decline compared to before, this congress is still a playground that Vietnamese audiences are particularly interested in. It is likely that at SEA Games 33, the broadcasters will have fierce competition and the audience will be the beneficiaries.
Discussing the issue of TV stations having to pay 20,000 USD to broadcast the 33rd SEA Games, Tuoi Tre received many different opinions. Some experts said that "paying money" to watch the 33rd SEA Games is an effective way to promote the development of this event. Others said that the SEA Games need to be widely promoted to ensure that a large number of people in countries in the region have access, so paying a high price for broadcasting rights is "against" the spirit that Southeast Asian sports is built on.
Speaking to Tuoi Tre , Mr. Tran Van Manh - General Secretary of the Vietnam Olympic Committee (VOC) - said that there were 5 television units in Vietnam through VOC to connect with the host Thailand to discuss the ownership of broadcasting copyright for the 33rd SEA Games, including VTV. The negotiation process will be agreed upon by the parties. The host Thailand is responsible for providing clean waves to the broadcasting units with the announced cost of 20,000 USD/television unit.
Less than two months until the 33rd SEA Games officially opens in Thailand, but up to this point no television station in Vietnam has obtained the copyright to broadcast the games.
