Kewell's coaching career

Less than 7 months after taking the hot seat, Harry Kewell had his contract terminated by Yokohama F. Marinos after a series of poor results in the J1 League in 2024.

This is considered a big shock for the former Australian player, especially when he brought the Japanese team to the final of the AFC Champions League in the 2023/24 season.

Kewell took over Yokohama in December 2023, replacing his compatriot Kevin Muscat. Despite a promising start, the team quickly fell into decline in the domestic league. After 23 matches, Yokohama won only 8, drew 5 and lost 10, ranking 12th in the rankings.

At the time of Kewell's sacking, Yokohama were just seven points above the relegation zone and 20 points behind leaders Machida Zelvia. A 4-1 win over Kashima Antlers was not enough to keep the Australian legend in his job.

After leaving Japan, Kewell continued to face doubts about his ability. His coaching career had been full of ups and downs and had encountered many setbacks.

After retiring in 2014, Kewell had four spells as manager of lower league clubs in England but failed to leave a clear mark.

He managed Watford U23s from 2015-2017, before landing his first senior job at Crawley Town in 2017. Kewell's subsequent spells in charge of Notts County (2018) and Oldham Athletic (2020-2021) both ended abruptly.

At Notts County, Kewell was sacked after just 14 games, while at Oldham, the former Liverpool star left his post with the team finishing 16th in League Two.

Kewell is still struggling to find his true footing in coaching - where he has never achieved the same consistency and success as he did as a player.
