Rice farmers in the Mekong Delta - the country's rice granary - received the news that Vietnamese rice is the most expensive in the world with great pride. However, according to many experts, this information is only partially true.
MSc. Nguyen Phuoc Tuyen - former Director of the Agricultural Extension Center of Dong Thap province - said that according to a report by the Thai Rice Exporters Association, Vietnam's rice export price surpasses many major rice exporting countries in the world.
But this is only true for white rice. Because for fragrant rice, Vietnam's export price is the lowest among exporting countries.
Specifically, by November 8, 2023, Vietnam's 5% broken rice reached 653-657 USD/ton. With this price, Vietnam has officially surpassed Thailand and Pakistan. Specifically, the price of 5% broken rice of Thailand and Pakistan is 583 and 568-572 USD/ton, respectively.
Similarly, for 25% broken rice, Vietnamese rice prices are also at 643-647 USD/ton compared to 560 and 488-492 USD/ton of Thailand and Pakistan, respectively.
Meanwhile, in the fragrant rice category, the leading price is Basmati rice from Pakistan and India with prices of 1,175-1,185 USD/ton respectively. Next is Hommali (Thailand) at 853 USD/ton and Pkha Malis (Cambodia) at 850 USD/ton. Vietnam's Jasmine rice is only priced at 748-752 USD/ton.
