Sudan's government said on July 21 that the country's army commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan received the Iranian ambassador and sent him to Tehran to strengthen friendly relations between the two countries after eight years of rift.

Sudan and Iran agreed to resume diplomatic relations in October last year, as Sudan's military-aligned government scrambled for allies amid a conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

According to a Sudanese government statement, General Burhan received Iranian Ambassador Hassan Shah Hosseini in Port Sudan - the Red Sea city that has become the de facto headquarters of Sudan's pro-military government since the capital Khartoum was devastated by fighting with RSF.

Sudan's Deputy Foreign Minister Hussein al-Amin declared it “the beginning of a new phase in bilateral relations” as Burhan saw off Sudan's new Ambassador to Iran Abdelaziz Hassan Saleh on his way to assume his duties.

Sudan severed ties with Iran in 2016 in solidarity with Saudi Arabia, when Riyadh's embassy in Tehran was attacked following the execution of a prominent Shi'ite cleric. Several of Saudi Arabia's regional allies also severed ties with Iran at the time.

However, Riyadh and Tehran announced the restoration of ties in March 2023 following a China-brokered deal. Since then, Iran has moved to strengthen or restore ties with its Arab neighbors.
