With the theme “One vision, one goal, one community: Strengthening unity through sports”, AMMS-5 took place from October 9-11, 2019 in Manila, Philippines. AMMS-5 highlighted the role of sports in connecting culture and society and developing youth.
The Conference also issued a Joint Statement which noted the progress of the Work Plan on Sports 2016–2020, called for strengthening programmes for women and children, expanding people-to-people exchanges and raising the standards of event organisation.
Some new cooperation contents are encouraged, such as enhancing technical coordination around regional/continental tournaments, developing sports industry and sports tourism .
The official statement of AMMS-5 also expressed the spirit of community building through sports and suggested big ideas for future cooperation.
On the partnership front, AMMS-5 continues to promote the AMMS+Japan mechanism and exchange with other partners to take advantage of training resources, sports science and technology, and increase competition and training opportunities for young athletes. These orientations create momentum for the region to respond flexibly when the Covid-19 pandemic breaks out later.
It can be affirmed that AMMS-5 is a step to accelerate cooperation, focusing on youth, gender equality, community exchange and improving event management quality - values that were inherited and adjusted appropriately in the context of Covid-19 at AMMS-6.
AMMS-5 has reinforced the message that sports are the glue of the community and a potential socio-economic sector. This is an important stepping stone before ASEAN has to face the pandemic and reshape cooperation priorities in 2021.
