On October 11, 2017, Myanmar hosted the 4th AMMS in Nay Pyi Taw. The joint statement affirmed that sports are a tool to connect societies and promote people-to-people exchanges in the context of ASEAN accelerating the implementation of post-2015 plans.
At the Conference, the Ministers agreed to strengthen coordination between sports and education , health, and youth; maintain the focus on "sports for all" and school sports; enhance training for coaches and referees; and share models for organizing safe and transparent events.
The conference also affirmed the role of SOMS in monitoring progress and proposed to increase resource mobilization through dialogue partners. AMMS-4 also promoted the dissemination of “ASEAN identity” through regional festivals and sports days.
At the same time, it encourages initiatives to increase the participation of women, children, people with disabilities and coordinate the fight against doping and negative aspects in sports. This comprehensive approach is the premise for AMMS-5 (2019) to expand the cooperation program, especially on youth and gender equality.
A highlight of the Conference was the promotion of partnership cooperation. AMMS+Japan was strengthened; many initiatives on teacher-coach training, para-sports and governance were included in the coordination program. This platform helps the following sessions to issue specialized documents (for example, the Chiang Mai Declaration 2023 within the framework of AMMS+Japan).
AMMS-4 affirms the “sport for people” approach, increasing inclusiveness and sustainability; expanding the “door of cooperation” with partners, helping ASEAN accumulate resources and experience to realize long-term goals.
At the same time, AMMS-4 strengthened the “social connection circuit” of sports cooperation, standardizing priorities on inclusion, integrity and organizational capacity – pillars that continue to be emphasized in the following sessions.
