According to the Standing Office of the Gia Lai Province Civil Defense Command, at about 10:30 p.m. on October 4, fishing boat BD 83019-TS was operating about 17 nautical miles southeast of Ca Na estuary (Khanh Hoa province) when it was hit by a foreign oil tanker traveling in a south-north direction.
The collision caused fishing boat BD 83019-TS to sink completely, losing its navigation signal at 22:48. There were 11 fishermen on board. After sending out a distress signal, fishing boat BV 95869-TS, captained by Nguyen Van Tao (born in 1989, residing in Cat Tien commune), promptly approached and rescued 10 people. Captain Nguyen Tran Ut is currently missing, suspected to be trapped in the ship's cabin.
That same night, the Gia Lai Provincial Border Guard reported and requested the Navy Command, Coast Guard and the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center of Regions II and IV to mobilize vehicles to search for Captain Nguyen Tran Ut. At the same time, the unit proposed that the Provincial People's Committee notify and discuss with the Maritime Administration to verify information about the foreign oil tanker and coordinate in handling the incident.
