This name change follows the policy of the City Party Committee, People's Committee and the Ho Chi Minh City health sector on rearranging and reorganizing the grassroots health system in a more streamlined, efficient and closer to the people direction.
Accordingly, Ho Chi Minh City area (before merger) has 22 medical centers, Binh Duong province area (before merger) has 9 medical centers, and Ba Ria - Vung Tau province area (before merger) has 7 medical centers.
District, county and city health centers are converted into regional health centers. In particular, Nhieu Loc, Cho Lon, Hoa Hung and Can Gio regional health centers are adjusted to operate as health centers without inpatient beds.
The inpatient treatment function of these centers is transferred to general and specialized hospitals that are overloaded, in order to concentrate resources and improve the quality of medical examination and treatment for people.
In addition to regional medical centers, the Department of Health also reorganized 443 commune, ward, and special zone medical stations into 168 medical stations associated with 296 affiliated medical points.

To ensure legality and organizational unity after renaming and rearranging the health station and help the regional health center quickly stabilize and operate effectively, the Department of Health has implemented many important tasks such as: reviewing and handing over facilities, equipment, and assets; guiding procedures for engraving and registering new seals; developing regulations on functions, tasks, powers, and organizational structure of the regional health center...
The Ho Chi Minh City health sector also focuses on improving the capacity of the health station system by standardizing the quality of primary health services, building a mechanism to attract people to health stations for examination, initial classification and continuous health monitoring.
At the same time, expand coverage of preventive health services and chronic disease management in the community.
Recently, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health solemnly held a ceremony to announce and award appointment decisions to directors and deputy directors of 38 regional medical centers.
This event not only marks a turning point in the organizational structure, but also marks the beginning of a new journey in improving the quality of operations at the grassroots health sector, helping people have easier access to primary health services.
