Recently, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health reported on the progress of public investment projects of the city's health sector through different stages and recommended solutions to many current projects that are still stuck and facing difficulties.
Including the project to build an inpatient treatment block at Gia Dinh People's Hospital (HCMC) due to slow construction progress and financial difficulties of the contractor.
Specifically, in August 2025, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction issued an official dispatch requesting Gia Dinh People's Hospital to coordinate with project management consultants, supervision consultants, design consultants, and construction contractors to quickly complete the work to terminate the contract with the construction contractor.
In addition, the investor carries out related procedures to organize the selection of a new construction contractor in accordance with regulations, speeding up the implementation of the next steps to soon put the project into operation.
On September 12, Gia Dinh People's Hospital announced the termination of the contract with the joint venture of Thanh Do Construction Group Joint Stock Company and TPS Thanh Phong Joint Stock Company regarding the construction and equipment supply and installation package of the construction project to replace the inpatient treatment block of Gia Dinh People's Hospital.
On the same day, Gia Dinh People's Hospital announced the termination of the contract with Thanh Do Construction Group Joint Stock Company for the construction, supply and installation package: clean air system, FM200 automatic fire extinguishing system, solar hot water system in the construction project, replacing the hospital's inpatient treatment block.
The project to build a new one to replace the inpatient area of Gia Dinh People's Hospital was started on March 17, 2020 with a scale of two 15-storey buildings from the Ho Chi Minh City budget, the career development fund and loans with a total investment of more than 600 billion VND.
The project is managed by Thanh Do Construction Group Joint Stock Company as the contractor and this is one of the projects that has been repeatedly "named" for being behind schedule.
Hospital "borrows" facility to serve as inpatient treatment facility for patients
In early 2024, Gia Dinh People's Hospital had to break down the wall to "borrow" part of the Oncology Hospital's first facility (old Binh Thanh district, where a high-tech early disease screening and diagnosis center is being built) to treat inpatients.
This is a temporary solution in the context of an increasing number of patients coming for examination and treatment, hospital overload, while the project to build a new 15-storey building of Gia Dinh People's Hospital has been stagnant for many years and it is unknown when it will be completed.
For many years, Gia Dinh People's Hospital has always been overloaded, regularly providing emergency care to an average of 250 - 300 patients/day, treating more than 1,500 patients/day, and examining about 4,000 outpatients/day.
The hospital has made many efforts to create more space to reduce overload, such as adding more beds and using doctors' and nurses' rooms for patients, but there are still not enough rooms for patients.
