US judge sets Trump trial date on classified documents case

With the above order by Judge Aileen Cannon, the trial of Mr. Trump on the secret dossier case takes place less than 6 months before the US presidential election in November 2024, according to Reuters.

US federal prosecutors working for special prosecutor Jack Smith on July 18 asked Ms. Cannon to schedule a trial in December this year, while Mr. Trump's lawyers said there was no need to set a trial date.

Mr. Smith was appointed by US Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022 to oversee two US Justice Department investigations related to Mr. Trump, including the secret dossier case and efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 US presidential election.

Judge Cannon initially set the trial for August 14, a date both sides objected to, saying they would need more time to prepare. Smith's team sought a delay until December 11.

In the classified documents case, former President Trump was charged along with his aide Walt Nauta. In a motion on July 10, lawyers for both men asked Judge Cannon to postpone their criminal trial.

Their lawyers argued that Mr Trump "is running for president of the United States and is currently the likely Republican nominee", so "this work requires a great deal of time and energy, and that effort will continue until the election on November 5, 2024".

According to the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, Mr. Trump is still leading the race to become the Republican presidential candidate for the 2024 presidential election, receiving 47% support in the party, much higher than 19% for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

The seven-day poll, completed on July 17, showed Mr. Trump had increased his approval rating from a June Reuters/Ipsos poll, when he was the choice of 43% of Republicans.
