Adding more schools to the "trillion-dollar" university group: Where does the money come from?

(Dan Tri) - Up to this point, the country has 3 more universities in Ho Chi Minh City with revenue of over 1,000 billion VND/year, bringing the total number of "trillion" universities to 14.

These three schools include: Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education and Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade.

According to statistics up to June 2024 of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy , the total revenue in 2023 of the school reached 1,515 billion VND.

This school's revenue comes from two sources: tuition fees of 675 billion VND and legal revenue of 840 billion VND.

This is the first medical school to join the "trillion-dollar" university club. With a figure of 1,515 billion VND. Since its inception, the school's revenue has far exceeded many older trillion-dollar universities.

Notably, this is also the only school in the group of "trillion-dollar" universities today whose tuition revenue is lower than other sources of income.

Total revenue in 2024 of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education is 1,120 billion VND. Of which, tuition fees account for 976 billion VND, funding from the budget and outside is only 13 billion.

Revenue from scientific research and technology transfer alone is 46 billion VND; revenue from other sources is 67 billion VND.

This year, the school recruits nearly 8,000 students at its Ho Chi Minh City campus and its branch in Dong Nai .

Tuition fees for the 2025 enrollment period are at 32-62 million VND/year, an increase of more than 12% compared to last year and will remain at this level until the 2026-2027 school year.

For the general program, students pay about 32.5-40 million VND/year. For the English training program and the Vietnamese-Japanese program, tuition fees will increase by 4-7% compared to 2024, at 62 million VND and 51 million VND/year.

According to the report, in 2024, the total revenue of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade will reach 1,008.8 billion VND, officially bringing the school into the group of universities with revenue of over a trillion.

It is expected that by 2025, the school's total revenue will continue to increase to VND 1,136.6 billion. Of which, 80% of revenue comes from tuition fees, the remaining 20% ​​from scientific research, technology transfer and other service revenues.

The school's regular university tuition fees in 2025 range from 120 million VND to nearly 160 million VND for the entire course (from 3.5 to 4 years depending on the major).

Thus, up to this point, Vietnam has had 14 universities with revenue of more than 1,000 billion, including 8 public schools and 4 private schools.

10 public schools include Hanoi University of Science and Technology , National Economics University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, Can Tho University, Ton Duc Thang University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade.

4 private universities include FPT University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Nguyen Tat Thanh University, Van Lang University.

The public university with the highest revenue is currently Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, with total revenue in 2024 of 1,887 billion VND.

Of the 1,343 billion VND in revenue from education and training, tuition fees account for 1,281 billion VND, the rest comes from contracts, state and external funding. Other income is 61 billion VND.

In particular, income from science and technology transfer of Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics reached more than 520 billion VND, accounting for 27% of revenue.

Among the four private universities with trillion-VND revenue in Vietnam, FPT University's revenue is the highest at VND4,300 billion in 2024. Of which, revenue from tuition fees accounts for more than VND3,900 billion.
