Bad news for Apple

Apple appears to be planning to drastically cut iPhone Air production due to low sales, even though other iPhone 17 models are still recording sales that exceed expectations.

Recently, supply chain activity revealed that Apple is drastically adjusting production plans for the iPhone Air model after the device had lower-than-expected sales. Although total production of the iPhone 17 series is still stable at around 85-90 million units, the thin and light iPhone model has been cut "near to the point of discontinuation".

According to analysts from Mizuho Securities, Apple will reduce the iPhone Air by about 1 million units this year, while raising production targets for the standard and Pro models of the iPhone 17. Specifically, the basic iPhone 17 model will be added by about 2 million units, the iPhone 17 Pro by about 1 million, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max by about 4 million units.

The iPhone Air was initially expected to account for around 10-15% of total orders for the iPhone 17 series, but actual volumes will be “significantly reduced” from November, the report said.

One of the reasons cited by technology sites is that the iPhone Air has a very thin and light design, but suffers from battery life and only has a single camera compared to the Pro models. This has limited the ability to attract users in fiercely competitive markets.

In contrast, the iPhone 17 series as a whole is off to a very impressive start. Data from the US and Chinese markets shows that this new iPhone series has surpassed the previous generation by about 14% in the first 10 days of launch, in which the standard model increased by about 31% compared to the iPhone 16, and the Pro/Pro Max model increased by about 12%.

Apple's shift to focusing on the standard and Pro iPhone 17 models instead of continuing to invest heavily in the iPhone Air is a strategic move. In it, the tech giant maintains its most attractive and high-margin product line instead of keeping a weak-selling sub-model.

However, Apple has not yet made an official statement confirming the “discontinuation” of the iPhone Air. This is only information provided by analysis sources and the supply chain.
