Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer announced his retirement from the German national team

"Today marks the end of my career with the German national football team," goalkeeper Manuel Neuer wrote on his personal Instagram about his decision to say goodbye to the German "Tank" after 15 years wearing the shirt.

The 38-year-old goalkeeper has made 124 appearances for the national team and kept 51 clean sheets, helping Germany win the 2014 World Cup held in Brazil.

"Anyone who knows me knows that this decision was not taken lightly. I feel very well physically and, of course, the 2026 World Cup also appeals to me.

But I have decided that this is the right time to end my career with the national team," goalkeeper Manuel Neuer added.

Soon after, the German Football Association (DFB) also praised Manuel Neuer as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time in the country and the world .

"Every word seems so small. But they come from the heart: Thank you, Manuel Neuer.

Of course for your unique and outstanding successes. But especially for your teamwork, your dedication, your inspiration to other players and to millions of fans and footballers around the world," the DFB said on its homepage.

"You changed the way the goalkeeper role was seen, even shaped the role of the number one stopper. The way you carried yourself in the German national team, the way you left your mark on the team.

Whether you were a substitute or captain, you were always a role model for everyone. You were a world champion and a close friend. We will always miss you! DBF added.

Neuer's retirement comes just two days after German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan also announced his retirement from the national team. Previously, other famous names of the German "Tank" also announced their retirement from the national team, namely Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller.
