The culprit that makes stomach pain worse

VnExpressVnExpress31/01/2024

Increased stomach pain can be a sign of peptic ulcer, acute inflammation of the gastric mucosa, eating lots of fried foods, drinking alcohol.

Stomach pain is a symptom of dull, burning pain in the epigastric region, which can occur in a short time or be severe and prolonged.

Dr. Hoang Dinh Thanh, Center for Endoscopy and Digestive Endoscopic Surgery, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that some of the following causes can make stomach pain worse.

Peptic ulcer is the leading cause of stomach pain. The disease is caused by factors such as the use of painkillers, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), aspirin, Helicobacter pylori (HP) bacteria, Crohn's disease, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome...

Acute inflammation of the gastroduodenal mucosa often occurs suddenly after drinking a lot of alcohol, eating spicy foods or taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain relievers (NSAIDs).

Indigestion causes burning pain in the epigastric region (above the navel) or a feeling of fullness and bloating after eating. Usually, doctors prescribe a gastroscopy to determine the condition of the normal gastric mucosa, atrophy or damage that has progressed to gastric mucosal ulceration.

Unscientific eating habits such as eating at irregular times, eating too late, too fast or until full, waiting until the stomach is really hungry, reading books or watching TV while eating can make stomach pain worse. People who eat a lot of fried, spicy, sour foods, alcohol, and smoke are also prone to stomach pain. This condition tends to be more serious during Tet.

Prolonged stress and anxiety release hormones and neurotransmitters in the body, negatively affecting intestinal motility and stomach contractions. Patients may experience abdominal pain, bloating, heartburn, etc. Stress is also the cause of imbalance in intestinal microflora, leading to stomach pain.

Side effects of medications such as over-the-counter pain relievers, antibiotics, cancer medications, iron supplements... can cause stomach upset and many other digestive problems.

Some possible side effects include heartburn, stomach irritation, nausea, diarrhea, bloating, constipation, abdominal cramps...

Other causes of stomach pain include allergies and intolerance to foods such as milk, soy, peanuts, wheat, snails, clams, fish eggs, etc. Dr. Thanh recommends that people with this condition should see a doctor for advice on a suitable diet.

Severe stomach pain is also a symptom of other serious diseases such as acute pancreatitis, partial intestinal obstruction, gallstones, pancreatic tumors, pyloric stenosis...

Doctor Thanh Dau said that stomach pain is a common symptom that can occur at any age, potentially causing many worrying health complications. The doctor advises people with severe, sudden pain, accompanied by chest tightness, difficulty breathing, coffee-colored or bloody vomit, and unexplained weight loss to see a doctor soon. Depending on the specific cause, the doctor will prescribe the appropriate treatment method.

Prevent the disease by drinking enough water, avoiding foods that cause allergies, controlling stress, and eating healthy, especially as Tet approaches.
