Prime Minister inspects flood response work in deeply flooded areas of Hanoi

This evening (October 9), Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh inspected the flood response work in Trung Gia and Da Phuc communes, Hanoi City - places that are being deeply flooded due to rising floodwaters on rivers. Accompanying him was Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Bui Thi Minh Hoai.

For more than a day now, rapidly rising floodwaters have isolated many areas of Trung Gia and Da Phuc communes. In particular, this afternoon, the foundation of some sections of the Hanoi - Thai Nguyen railway line passing through Trung Gia commune was eroded and washed away, causing the rails to sag and the railway line to be paralyzed.

Visiting the scene, the Prime Minister emphasized that these are vulnerable areas, requesting Hanoi to coordinate with relevant ministries, branches and units to closely monitor flood developments to have appropriate response plans, including taking into account the worst-case scenario to proactively evacuate people to safety.

Also at the scene, the Prime Minister called to direct Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Hoang Hiep to report on the flood situation on the rivers, requesting agencies to closely monitor the rain and water levels on the rivers to flexibly release water, avoiding dyke breaks downstream, including considering closing the spillways of hydroelectric reservoirs upstream.

Encouraging the forces on dike protection duty, the Prime Minister thanked the officers and soldiers for working through the night with the highest sense of responsibility and urgency, and asked the forces to assign tasks appropriately and in the most scientific and effective way.

The Prime Minister sympathized with the difficulties and losses of the people, hoping that people would always unite and support each other to fight floods and, if there were floods, prioritize relief for the elderly and children. The Prime Minister asked Hanoi to study a long-term solution for this dike because the river water level has now exceeded the historical flood peak.
