On May 23, 1977, Vietnam and Spain established diplomatic relations. The two countries established the framework of “Strategic Partnership towards the Future” in December 2009.

Currently, Spain is Vietnam's fifth largest trading partner in the European Union (EU) and Vietnam is Spain's largest trading partner in ASEAN. Bilateral trade turnover in 2024 will reach 4.72 billion USD (the highest level ever), up 20% compared to 2023.

Spain currently has 97 projects in Vietnam with a capital of 143.88 million USD (ranked 46/148 countries and territories); focusing on the fields of processing and manufacturing industry (56.1%) and accommodation and food services (32.8%).

Vietnam has 3 investment projects in Spain with a capital of 64.2 million USD in the fields of scientific and technological research and processing and manufacturing industry (ranked 24th out of 79 countries with Vietnam's investment).

Spain ratified the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) in January 2022.

Over the past time, the Vietnam-Spain relationship has continued to develop well through delegation exchanges and contacts at all levels. The two countries have actively cooperated and supported each other in multilateral mechanisms, especially within the framework of the United Nations and ASEAN-EU.
