(CLO) A light seaplane crashed near Rottnest Island off the coast of Perth, Western Australia, killing two tourists from Switzerland and Denmark and the pilot, authorities said on January 8.

The plane, carrying a total of six people, crashed on the afternoon of January 7 in Thomson Bay, an area known for its beaches, marinas and busy ferry terminals.

According to witnesses, the plane had just taken off a few minutes ago, flying about three meters above the water, when it crashed into a cluster of rocks about 500 meters from shore and fell into the sea.

Greg Quin, a witness at the scene, said: "Many people on the boat rushed to help immediately. However, the plane was quickly swept away by the wind and current."

Western Australia Police Commissioner Colonel Blanch said significant resources had been deployed to the scene, supported by police water and civilian vessels. "There were many members of the public who went out of their way to assist in the rescue operation. I thank them for their efforts," he said.

Western Australian Premier Roger Cook and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese both sent their condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. Mr Cook called it a "concerning emergency" and expressed his gratitude to first responders at the scene.

Rottnest Island, also known as Wadjemup, is a popular tourist destination that attracts thousands of visitors each year. It is famous for its quokkas and seaplane services from Perth. The accident has cast a shadow over the island, which is considered a holiday paradise.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the accident, while details remain limited.
