"This is the first time a General Secretary and President of our country has directly attended high-level meetings at the United Nations General Assembly," Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son emphasized when answering the press before the trip.

Promote multilateralism

On September 24, when General Secretary and President To Lam delivered Vietnam's important and important messages at the United Nations General Assembly in the US, more than 240 officers and soldiers of the Engineer Team No. 3 and Level 2 Field Hospital No. 6 from Vietnam will depart to carry out the United Nations peacekeeping mission in remote Africa. This is one of the most vivid evidences showing Vietnam's sense of responsibility towards the work of the United Nations - an organization of which Vietnam has been a member since 1977. "Vietnam has sent peacekeepers to many hot spots in the world, including South Sudan, where I had the opportunity to meet them directly" - President of the 78th United Nations General Assembly Dennis Francis shared. He emphasized that Vietnam is "an active and responsible member, and has been continuously making meaningful and very important contributions to the United Nations". According to Mr. Francis, General Secretary and President To Lam's participation in the upcoming High-Level Week of the United Nations General Assembly is a "very meaningful move, demonstrating the highest political commitment at an important time when the international community is determined to promote multilateralism to deal with a series of current global challenges". The focus of this High-Level Week will be the Future Summit (from September 22 to 23) and the General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly (from September 24 to 28). The parties are expected to focus on calling for increased international cooperation and strengthening multilateralism, in which the United Nations has a central position to promote the implementation of common goals, especially the sustainable development goals. Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, head of the Vietnamese delegation to the United Nations, said that the Vietnamese delegation will emphasize the important message of "Strengthening multilateralism, acting together to create a peaceful, stable, prosperous and sustainable future for all people". "This is the first time that the General Secretary of our Party has directly attended the United Nations General Assembly and is also the first multilateral diplomatic activity of General Secretary and President To Lam at the global international organization the United Nations. Thereby, strongly reaffirming at the highest level the foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralization, diversification, proactive and active international integration comprehensively, deeply and effectively, sharing Vietnam's vision and solutions on the role of the United Nations and major world issues", Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang said. According to Mr. Dang Hoang Giang, this event demonstrated the deep concern of the Vietnamese Party and State for multilateral cooperation, major agendas of the United Nations and comprehensive relations with the largest organization on the planet.

For the benefit of all

From a country receiving support from the United Nations in the early stages of post-war reconstruction, Vietnam has increasingly participated in and made important contributions to the United Nations. Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang cited that Vietnam is currently the 49th largest contributor to the United Nations budget. Vietnam has also participated increasingly deeply and made meaningful contributions to all three main pillars: peace - security, development cooperation and human rights. Vietnam is one of the leading countries supporting multilateralism and multilateral approaches to solving global challenges, affirming the key role of the United Nations. Since 2014, Vietnam has actively participated in United Nations peacekeeping operations, sending more than 800 military and police officers to carry out missions in remote areas such as South Sudan and the Central African Republic, Abyei and at the United Nations headquarters. They have provided practical support and bonded with the local people, truly becoming "messengers of peace" in each stationed area, thereby enhancing the image and position of the Vietnamese armed forces in the eyes of international friends. Although resources and the level of scientific and technological development are still modest, Vietnam has made every effort to respond to climate change, committing to strive to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Vietnam is in the core group promoting the United Nations General Assembly resolution to seek advisory opinions from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the responsibility of countries for climate change. Vietnam has also made many contributions as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2023-2026 term, a member of the International Law Commission for the 2023-2027 term, as well as twice serving as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and many other important agencies. "These successes demonstrate Vietnam's strong commitment to the fundamental principles and values in the United Nations Charter, international law and multilateralism in general," affirmed President of the 78th United Nations General Assembly Dennis Francis.
