President Biden sends greetings to Jimmy Carter on his 100th birthday

Mr Biden has sent birthday wishes to his "good friend" Jimmy Carter, as the longest-living former president in US history turns 100 on October 1.

"His hopeful vision for our country, his commitment to a better world , and his unwavering belief in the power of human goodness continue to be a guiding beacon for all of us," CBS News quoted President Biden's message on September 29.

The current White House boss praised Mr. Carter as "one of the most influential politicians in American history".

"He has always been a source of moral strength for our country and the world. I saw that as a young senator," Biden said. In 1976, as a senator, Biden endorsed Jimmy Carter's campaign - becoming the first elected official outside of Carter's home state of Georgia to endorse a presidential candidate. According to Axios , the two have maintained a close relationship for decades.

When Mr. Biden ran for reelection in 2020, former President Carter endorsed him, saying that Mr. Biden “is a loyal and devoted friend.”

President Biden mentioned that this year will be the first time Mr. Carter celebrates his birthday without his wife, after Mrs. Rosalynn Carter passed away in November 2023 at the age of 96.

"To put it briefly, Mr. President, I admire you very much. You have always been a good friend," Mr. Biden told former President Carter.

Jimmy Carter has been in a nursing home since February 2023. In August, his son, Chip Carter, said his father wanted to live long enough to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in this year's election.
