On October 17, the leader of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City said that the city's policy is to maintain stability in the exam subjects and structure of the 10th grade entrance exam.
Specifically, in 2026, Ho Chi Minh City will continue to choose Literature, Math and Foreign Language as the three entrance exam subjects for grade 10.
According to the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, for many years, Ho Chi Minh City, Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Binh Duong (old) have all organized public 10th grade entrance exams with 3 compulsory subjects: Math, Literature and English. After the three localities merged, the unification of the exam format was implemented to facilitate students, parents and schools in the enrollment process.

Ho Chi Minh City announced the 3 public 10th grade exam subjects the earliest in the country.
According to the Department, the requirements for the exam’s ability and thinking level may be announced this month so that school teachers can proactively develop appropriate review programs. In some special areas such as Thanh An island commune, students will be considered for admission to grade 10 based on their academic records.
According to the 10th grade admission regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training , localities can choose to take an entrance exam, consider admission to 10th grade or combine. For the entrance exam, the exam includes Math, Literature and a third subject (or a combined exam). This subject is selected by the Department from the subjects assessed by scores, including: Foreign Language 1, Civic Education, Natural Sciences, History and Geography, Technology, and Information Technology.
However, provinces and cities are not allowed to choose a subject for more than three consecutive years, starting from 2025. The announcement time for the third exam subject is after the end of the first semester, no later than March 31 every year.
Up to now, Ho Chi Minh City is the first locality to complete the plan to unify the 10th grade entrance exam after the merger. The city currently has about 2.5 million students, the largest in the country.
There are 170 public high schools alone, of which four specialized schools are directly under the Department: Le Hong Phong, Tran Dai Nghia, Le Quy Don and Hung Vuong.
