That morning, thousands of compatriots gathered at Ton Tho Tuong School (now Ten Lo Man School) to listen to lawyer Nguyen Huu Tho, Head of the delegation of representatives from all walks of life, speak. The inner-city Executive Committee decided to turn the rally into a large demonstration protesting against the US intervention. From the gathering point, compatriots took to the streets to Ben Thanh market, dividing into many directions to march, raising high the red flag with a yellow star, the portrait of President Ho Chi Minh, shouting the slogan "Down with French imperialism and its puppets", protesting against the US intervention in Vietnam. This event caused a great resonance throughout the country, going down in the nation's history with the name "National Day of Anti-Americanism".
