Mr. Pham Phu Ngoc, Deputy Director of the Hoi An World Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation Center, said that from June 2025, the unit will actively coordinate with the locality and heritage conservation collaborators to review the list of degraded relics in the old town. From there, propose solutions to support or demolish relics at risk of collapse, ensuring safety during the rainy and stormy season.

Through the survey, the center discovered 30 relics in the old quarter that were degraded. Specifically, there were 9 relics that were seriously degraded, 14 relics that were heavily degraded and 7 relics that were slightly degraded. Among the relics that were severely degraded, most of them were facing the risk of collapse such as the house at 98 Phan Chau Trinh, 7/2 Nguyen Hue, 26 Tran Quy Cap...

“In addition to the 19 structures that have been supported since previous years and are currently being reinforced by the owners of the relics, the center has reported and proposed that relevant levels and sectors dismantle 9 relics for restoration, and at the same time relocate people living in 10 relics at risk of collapse when storms and floods occur. For less degraded ancient houses, depending on the level of storms and floods, the locality can relocate people to safe locations to limit risks,” Mr. Pham Phu Ngoc informed.

However, during the review process, the authorities encountered difficulties when they could not contact the owners to implement support and reinforcement plans, even though many relics had seriously degraded, such as the houses at 12/11 Bach Dang, 17/66 Hai Ba Trung or 170 Tran Phu... The Center said that it would coordinate with the locality to monitor the storm and flood situation to promptly handle the situation to ensure the safety of the relics.

Hoi An Ancient Town has about 1,130 relics, including 1,068 ancient houses, most of which are made of wood and are hundreds of years old, so they always face impacts, termites, and potential risks of damage, and can collapse at any time, especially when there are heavy storms.

Chairman of Hoi An Ward People's Committee Nguyen Tan Cuong said that due to its location along the Thu Bon River downstream, every year Hoi An ancient town is often heavily affected by storms and floods.

Therefore, disaster prevention work is always identified by the locality as an extremely important task, because this is not only a place for people to live but also a part of the world cultural heritage of Hoi An Ancient Town recognized by UNESCO.

Therefore, disaster prevention and control work is always identified by the locality as a key task, not only to ensure people's safety but also to contribute to preserving the world cultural heritage of Hoi An Ancient Town.

Since mid-July, just a few days after the merger, Hoi An ward has issued a decision to establish a Command Board for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue with full functions, tasks and specific powers.

In addition, 18 sub-committees for natural disaster prevention and control were established in residential areas, while scenarios were developed and situations were predicted for each level of storm and flood to promptly have appropriate handling directions.

Notably, the locality established a Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue Team with 214 team members ready to respond to any natural disaster situation.

"Hoi An ancient town is often affected by natural disasters, so in recent years, the locality has built a specific and scientific prevention and control plan according to the motto "4 on-site".

Along with that, functional forces, residential groups and people are trained, proactively coordinating to deploy response measures and evacuation when bad situations occur. Thanks to that, disaster prevention and control work in the area, especially in the old quarter, is always in a state of readiness," Mr. Nguyen Tan Cuong shared.
