From bomb-torn land to famous tourist destination

Hoi An was the leading flag in the uprising to seize power in the August Revolution of 1945. This was the place that soon accepted Marxism-Leninism and formed the predecessor organizations of the Communist Party. On March 28, 1930, in Hoi An, the Quang Nam Provincial Party Committee was officially established and secretly operated.

Memories of a time of struggle

Later, my parents told me that during the difficult days of the revolutionary movement, the people of Hoi An participated in many struggles and strikes, causing great resonance. In harmony with the boiling atmosphere of the August Revolution, more than 5,000 revolutionary masses of Hoi An, led by armed self-defense teams, rose up in revolt, taking power into the hands of the people...

Since then, the people of Hoi An have enthusiastically participated in building the Party, government, armed forces and the great national unity bloc to later join the resistance war against French colonialism and American imperialism to achieve complete victory. After the country's reunification, the Party, government and people of Hoi An joined hands and united to heal the wounds of war and build a new life.

A developing and expanding Hoi An...

From a locality that suffered much pain and loss during the war, Hoi An today has risen strongly, becoming a world-famous tourist destination. Talking to us about the changes in his hometown, Comrade Tong Quoc Hung, Vice Chairman of Hoi An Ward People's Committee said: "Promoting the tradition of the heroic hometown, in recent years, the Party Committee, government and people of Hoi An have had the right policies and directions in determining the economic structure for investment and development in a reasonable manner for each period, maintaining the viewpoint of management, conservation and reasonable exploitation of cultural values ​​and natural resources to build Hoi An in the direction of an ecological-cultural-tourist city...".

In fact, tourism models such as "motor-free streets", "old town night", "lantern festival" have been effectively implemented in Hoi An, creating a unique impression in the hearts of tourists. Not only relying on the advantages of heritage, Hoi An also opens many new types of tourism such as cultural tourism, sea and island exploration, eco-resort, homestay... Long-standing traditional craft villages such as Thanh Ha pottery, Kim Bong carpentry, Tra Que vegetables... are put into tourism exploitation, opening up a new direction, creating a unique product in the traditional tourism product line, contributing to both preserving craft villages and increasing income for people in the suburbs.

Since 2017, Hoi An has no more poor households. By 2024, the budget revenue in Hoi An city will reach nearly 1,800 billion VND; the total number of tourists to Hoi An will reach nearly 5 million. In the first 6 months of 2025 alone, Hoi An welcomed about 2.8 million visitors, an increase of 17.4% over the same period in 2024. Revenue is estimated at 3,163 billion VND, an increase of 41.3%. Hoi An heritage city continues to be honored in many international polls. The total state budget revenue in the area is estimated at 1,785 billion VND, an increase of 275.5%. Average income per capita will reach 64.4 million VND (in 2024), an increase of more than 21 million VND/person compared to 2023.

In 2025, Hoi An aims to achieve a total production value of more than 8.8 trillion VND, an increase of more than 14% compared to 2024. Of which, the total number of visitors will reach 4.977 million, with an average income per capita of 74 million VND/year.

After 80 years of construction and development, thanks to the joint efforts of the government and the people, Hoi An - a land once riddled with bombs and bullets - has now "changed its skin", achieving many achievements in socio-economic development. With its outstanding achievements, Hoi An was honored by the Party and State with the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces (in 1998) and Hero of Labor in the renovation period (in 2000).

Coming to Hoi An in the historic days of August, walking on the peaceful old streets, looking at the quiet moss-covered houses, we met friendly smiles, joyful eyes clearly shown on the bright faces of the people... That alone is enough to feel the change of this land. After the administrative unit arrangement, Hoi An is still a world cultural heritage, an extremely valuable resource for development.
