38-point joint statement, 3 core tasks, launching "extremely strong" support package for Ukraine

After the first day of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Summit in Washington DC, USA, on July 10, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the bloc, leaders of member countries issued a joint statement.

In the 38-point joint statement, leaders of NATO member countries affirmed solidarity within the bloc, while emphasizing that the military alliance continues to be an important and indispensable transatlantic forum for consultation, coordination and action on all issues related to collective security and that of each member country.

NATO allies affirmed that they will continue to carry out the bloc's three core missions including deterrence and defense, crisis prevention and management, and cooperative security.

According to Russia's TASS news agency, NATO announced the establishment of the Security Assistance and Training Unit (NSATU), which is tasked with coordinating the provision of military equipment and training to Ukraine by allies and partners, with the goal of "putting security assistance to Kiev on a long-term, enhanced, predictable and consistent basis".

The NSATU will operate in NATO member states and will "support Ukraine's self-defense capabilities in accordance with the UN Charter," the statement said. "In accordance with international law, the NSATU will not make NATO a party to the conflict."

In addition, summit participants moved to establish the NATO-Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training and Education Centre (JATEC), a key pillar of practical cooperation, to "identify and apply lessons from the Russia-Ukraine conflict and enhance Kiev's interoperability with the military alliance."

In addition, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also decided to appoint a High Representative of the military alliance in Ukraine, a move welcomed by the Summit.

Also at the NATO Summit, leaders agreed on aid that includes increased coordination of arms supplies, about 40 billion euros ($43.4 billion) in support for Ukraine next year, a commitment to provide advanced air defense systems and the transfer of F-16 fighter jets.

Regarding the transfer of F-16s, on the same day, Reuters news agency quoted US Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirming that the first batch of fighter jets, from Denmark and the Netherlands, were on their way to Ukraine and would be "unleashed" to fly over the Eastern European country's skies this summer.

In addition, the diplomat also revealed that a very strong support package for Ukraine will be announced in the next few days to build a clear and solid bridge for joining NATO.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the same day expressed his gratitude to the US, Denmark and the Netherlands for the above move, affirming that this will help end more than 2 years of fighting with Russia because "F-16 brings fair and lasting peace closer".
